Spain surpasses the barrier of incidence by adding 10,474 new infections: {Translated in full} Updated April 14, 2021 6:05 p.m
-On Wednesday, Spain once again surpassed the symbolic barrier of 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The 14-day incidence rate was 200.98. Spain had fallen below this threshold of 200 cases on 26 February, when an incidence of 193.91 was recorded, in the middle of a downward curve of the pandemic that bottomed out on 16 March. Since then, infections have continued to rise, albeit more gently than in recent waves.
-The incidence has risen in 13 communities, as well as in Ceuta and Melilla. The regions with the worst figures are Navarre, with 433.76, Madrid, with 347.14, and the Basque Country, with 345.87.
-The Ministry of Health has reported 10,474 new infections in its daily report, which leaves a total of 3,387,022 infected since the beginning of the pandemic. By region, Madrid leads the list of new infections with 2,541 reported today, followed by Andalusia, with 2,278, Catalonia, with 2,153, and the Basque Country, with 1,005.
-In the last 24 hours, 131 people have died, bringing the total number of deaths from COVID-19 in more than a year of pandemic to 76,756.
-In terms of hospitalisations, ICU beds occupied by COVID patients represent 21.56%, a total of 2,153 patients. In Spain, 9,795 patients have been hospitalised due to coronavirus, a number that has remained more or less stable over the last few days.
-These figures come at a time when the pharmaceutical company Pfizer has brought forward the delivery of 50 million doses to the European Union. This was announced by the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, on Wednesday, 24 hours after the suspension of the distribution of Janssen vaccines due to cases of thrombosis in the United States.
-The Johnson&Johnson lab has 55 million single-dose vaccines committed in the second quarter of 2021. “The pandemic is a threat. Denmark Quits AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 Shot: Denmark on Wednesday became the first country to stop using AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine altogether over a potential link to a rare but serious form of blood clot. Giant Catfish Captured In Sevilla’s Guadalquivir River: {Translated selected content}
Ecologistas en Acción de Andalucía was recently informed of the capture of a catfish of almost two meters and about 100 kilos of weight downstream of the Alcalá del Río Dam, in the province of Seville. The fact was confirmed by the competent authorities at the meeting of the Working Group on Water of the Doñana Natural Space Participation Council, which took place last week. Previous catches were also confirmed both in the Iznájar reservoir (Córdoba) and in the Gergal reservoir (Seville). The representatives of the entities that make up the working group, including the Doñana Biological Station, decided to send the Peno of the Doñana Council the request that the Environmental Administration immediately develop eradication and control measures for the species.
The catfish is a super-predatory fish that can measure 2.5 meters and weigh 180 kilos, with a life expectancy of 30 years. It is the most voracious of all large predatory fish and feeds from other species of fish to water birds and small mammals. It is an introduced invasive exotic species whose presence is especially worrying in the surroundings of the Guadalquivir Marshes, where there are the very few remaining populations of gray teals, malvasias, brown poles or horned coots, all of them endangered birds. Due to its colonizing potential and constituting a serious threat to native species, habitats or ecosystems, in Spain the species is included in the Spanish Catalog of Invasive Exotic Species.
