Halting Erosion using Vetiver
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment depending on the current travel restrictions. Please email or call first. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa.
Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture.
Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites.
In the 2 photos below you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.
We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge.
Here is a link to a short video showing the results.
https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo
We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.

Recommendations & Requests
Electricity tariff changes: I owned an Energy Advisory Consultancy in the UK so I understand exactly what is being being implemented and how both the Government and Electric companies are doing the public a disservice with the lack of accurate details.
The euroweekly article is no longer accurate, the data that Valverde used back in Feb/ Mar has already changed several times, even the Consumers Organisation (OCU.org) offered a comparison which is now just nonsense.
The problem is that even though we are just 14 days away from the official implementation there are no officially published tariffs and Endesa has further muddied the waters by unofficially announcing a drop in the PUNTA tariff to 17.3 cents/Kw which is much lower than everyone elses 22.3 cents/Kw they have not however qualified for how long this tariff will remain in effect and the other 2 tariffs for levels LLANO and VALLE are now more expensive than the other companies. Well done Endesa, you have done it again, they are experts at sleight of hand much like their, for e.g. Tempo Happy 50 get 50 hrs FREE electricity just don’t look at the price you are paying for Potencia and Kws used. The number of my Spanish neighbours who got taken in by that one was amazing so far I have dealt with 73 households and I thought I had retired.
Sorry, got on my box again. Thanks for your time

Andalusia falls below a thousand daily Covid infections: {Translation} Updated: 18/05/2021, 13:52
-With 938 new infections in the last 24 hours, Covid’s statistics in Andalusia return to records from the end of March, below a thousand positive cases per day. This is 123 fewer cases than those recorded on the same day last week and 559 fewer than those reported this Monday.
-This respite is not as strong in the mortality data. After Monday’s good record, with only two deaths, Andalusia has 17 deaths this Tuesday, four in Granada and Seville, three in Cadiz, two in Malaga and Jaen and one each in Almeria and Huelva. The total number of deaths directly attributable to the pandemic since March 2020 is close to ten thousand people.
-The 14-day incidence rate has fallen by one point to 169 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This drop is possible thanks to the fall in this indicator in the provinces of Granada, Huelva and Malaga, as in the rest there are slight increases.
-The cumulative 7-day incidence rate fell by three points. Almeria marks the minimum, with 37 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants and Granada the maximum with 113 cases.
*Hospitalised patients*
-In terms of care pressure, the number of hospital admissions has increased with 37 more than those recorded on Monday. There are 1,053 hospitalised Convid patients, of which 276 are in the ICU, three less than the day before.
*Incidence in municipalities*
-24 hours before the territorial committees review the alert levels by municipalities, Castro del Río, in Cordoba, again exceeds the rate of 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days set by the Board as a criterion for decreeing perimeter closure and suspension of non-essential activity with judicial endorsement after the end of the state of alarm. Two towns with more than 5,000 inhabitants are in the same situation: La Campana (Seville) and Montefrío (Granada). Another 11 municipalities of less than 5,000 inhabitants are in the same epidemiological incidence rate.
*Vaccination plan*
-Meanwhile, the vaccination process continues. As announced by the Regional Ministry of Health, this week it will open for those born in 1966, although the application is not operational at the moment for this age group, according to sources from the Salud Responde health care service, and does not appear on the Click Salud web application. Use of masks outdoors in Spain could be relaxed in the coming days, health official announces: As the country’s coronavirus data improves thanks to the vaccination drive, the Spanish Health Ministry is considering reducing some of the Covid-19 restrictions that are currently in place. That’s according to Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Center for Health Alerts (CCAES), who held a press conference on Monday evening to present the latest report on the epidemic. The government’s chief epidemiologist announced that “it is very possible” that the obligatory use of masks outdoors will be revised “in just a few days.” Full article: https://english.elpais.com/society/2021-05-18/use-of-masks-outdoors-in-spain-could-be-relaxed-in-the-coming-days-health-official-announces.html
Janssen delivers only 410,000 of the promised 5.5million second-quarter doses of their vaccine to Spain: The single-dose Janssen vaccine had been hoped to give the coronavirus vaccination campaign in Spain and Europe a big boost and accelerate the speed so that herd immunity would be reached more quickly, especially after the early delivery delays and issues with the AstraZeneca formula.
But the reality is turning into a fiasco.
Spain’s Ministry of Health officials have confirmed that the North American giant Johnson & Johnson, has once again told the EU authorities that this week it will not meet its planned delivery schedule again and that only with luck it will it supply half of the promised doses. Full article:

6,000 migrants swim across to Spain’s Ceuta in record crossing- What happens to the thousands of undocumented migrants after they arrive in Spain?:
-Tuesday’s newspapers in Spain have been dominated by the arrival of 6,000 undocumented migrants who crossed from Morocco over to the Spanish territory of Ceuta on Monday and Tuesday, as hundreds more tried to reach Spain’s north African enclave. They reached Ceuta by swimming or by walking at low tide from beaches a few kilometres to the south, some using inflatable swimming rings and rubber dinghies.
-When immigrants arrive in Spain en situación irregular (in an irregular situation, as Spanish legalese refers to migrants without the right visas or permits), the law establishes that there is a maximum period of 72 hours to carry out the police review of the migrant’s case. The 72-hour limit mentioned earlier is important because that is the limit for them to be held under police custody and can leave unless they’ve committed a documented felony. Photo:AFP

70 European and South American Banks Under Attack By Bizarro Banking Malware- Rouge Banking Apps Infect User Devices: A financially motivated cybercrime gang has unleashed a previously undocumented banking trojan, which can steal credentials from customers of 70 banks located in various European and South American countries.
“When Bizarro starts in an infected device, it first kills all the browser processes to terminate any existing sessions with online banking websites,” the researchers said. “When a user restarts the browsers, they will be forced to re-enter the bank account credentials, which will be captured by the malware. Another step Bizarro takes in order to get as many credentials as possible is to disable autocomplete in a browser.” Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2021/05/70-european-and-south-american-banks.html

El Corte Inglés Mijas to become a brand outlet centre: El Corte Inglés in Mijas is to be turned into a discount outlet centre similar to those the retail giant already runs in the Malaga Nostrum retail park and Fuengirola in the summer.

The Ikos chain opens the first all-inclusive five-star hotel in Spain in Estepona: {Translation}
-The Greek chain Ikos has opened Spain’s first all-inclusive five-star hotel in Estepona, Malaga. The Ikos Andalusia resort was due to open last year but has been delayed until this spring because of the coronavirus, which has forced strict security measures to be imposed when welcoming its first guests.
-Guests will be required to take free antigen tests on arrival to gain access to the facilities and those travelling outside Spain will be provided with the necessary tests on their return, albeit at an additional cost.
-The chain has invested 180 million euros in what is the brand’s first hotel in Spain. Yesterday, Monday, the first tourists began to arrive to stay in one of the 411 rooms and suites distributed in the seven buildings of the complex.
-It has 4,000 square metres of green areas and swimming pools and will operate under the ‘Infinite Lifestyle’ concept, which includes – among other services – vehicles available to guests for sightseeing, 300 selected international wines, waiter service on the beach and 24-hour waiter service in the rooms, as well as a professional nursery with a programme of activities for children.
-The most demanding guests will also have access to the Deluxe Collection line of services, which includes privileges such as the enjoyment of a private swimming pool.
-The gastronomic offer has been designed by Michelin-starred chefs David Ibarboure and Ettore Botrini both in the Mediterranean buffet and in its six à la carte restaurants, which include Italian, Greek and French cuisine. Ikos Andalusia will also be the first establishment in the chain to include a restaurant dedicated to local Spanish cuisine: Oliva.
-According to the company’s estimates, the new resort could generate up to 635 jobs in the area. It is the fifth resort of the chain, which already has Ikos Dassia and Ikos Aria on the Greek islands of Corfu and Kos, and Ikos Oceania and Olivia, located on the peninsula of Chalkidiki, also in Greece. The scams linked to HMRC, HSBC, Royal Mail, and Tesco you urgently need to be aware of: Scams have soared over the past year, with online shopping the most common type, according to Action Fraud, the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime. There has also been an increase in romance scams, after many turned to online dating.
Many scams direct people to genuine-looking websites or provide numbers for people to call. If you are unsure a correspondence is genuine, locate contact details for the company, organisation or government body via their official website listed in your search engine and make enquiries direct. Often, organisations will have details of common scams on their websites, to help people identify if they are likely being tricked. And already in a lower step are Ávila (47.2%) and Cuenca (45%).

They are followed by Granada (from 14.5% to 18.4%), Córdoba (from 24.1% to 26.7%), Ávila (from 44.6% to 47.2%) and Málaga (from 8, 4% to 10.7%).
