Public Holiday: Tuesday 12Oct. Fiesta Nacional de España is one of two “national days” of Spain and is held annually every 12 October on the day that Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas in 1492.
This is a major “bridge holiday” for the Spanish, with heavy traffic as many travel to family gatherings. “Bridge holiday” means that if the public/bank holiday is on a Tuesday or a Thursday you can have a 4 day weekend.
This is called ‘hacer puente’ in Spanish which means ‘to make a bridge; ‘ they call it “puente del Pilar” (bridge of the Pillar). Many businesses will close on Friday or Saturday and not reopen until Wednesday.
‘Nuestra Señora del Pilar’ – ‘our Lady of the Pillar’ is the patroness virgin of Spain and of the Hispanic peoples and of the Civil Guard of Spain.

Covid Spain- Health records 2,309 new infections, 77 deaths and an incidence of 48.18 cases: {Translation, summary} Updated: 8OCT21, 18:36
-The health authorities have reported in 77 deaths Friday, up from this Thursday, when they reported 23 deaths.
– In addition, the best record of hospitalisations in the historical series has been confirmed- never before have we had less than 2,100 people admitted for the infection since the care capacity has been registered.
-The incidence in Spain continues to decline. On Friday, the Ministry of Health reported 48.18 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, after the country entered the low-risk range for coronavirus on Thursday, falling below the symbolic barrier of 50 cases of incidence. Now, the next step is to reach what is known as the ‘new normal’, which is achieved by reporting fewer than 25 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the criteria of the Ministry of Health.
– All communities lower their rate of incidence. Specifically, ten come already in the range considered to be at low risk for COVID having lowered the barrier of 50 cases of incidence, according to the traffic light health: Extremadura (47), Castilla-La Mancha (45), Canary (45), Navarra (43), Comunitat Valenciana (37), Andalusia (35), La Rioja (35), Castilla y León (34), Galicia (18), and Asturias (15). The last two of these, Galicia and Asturias are now in what is known as the ‘new normal’, to notify least 25 cases of incidence, according to the criteria of Health. SPAIN
Spain’s Health Minister hints that indoor face mask rules will not be eased until spring: The Ministry of Health department’s head, Carolina Darias, hinted this Friday (8 October) that it is unlikely it would happen before spring. Darias, however, expressly avoided giving a date and called for patience, despite the improvement in the coronavirus pandemic figures and the fact that Spain returned to a Covid-19 ‘low risk’ zone yesterday after the cumulative incidence rate fell below 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants after some 14 months. Spain is the EU country with the most expensive electricity this Saturday: {Translation} The spectacular increase in electricity prices means that thousands of consumers wait until the weekend to carry out certain tasks, such as putting the washing machine, dryer, ironing or cooking in the oven, as the rates on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays are cheaper than on working days with the new pricing mechanism that came into force on 1 June.
-The regulated or pvpc tariffs that almost 11 million consumers have on Saturdays range from 21 cents (from 15:00 to 16:00) to 30 cents (between 19:00 and 20:00). A year ago, that range was between 8 cents (at 5 p.m.) and 10 cents (8 p.m.).
-These regulated tariffs respond to the price of electricity on the wholesale market, which once again set a new record on Saturday, reaching an average of 226.21 euros per megawatt hour (MWh). The peak price is 254.45 euros.
-Incidentally, Spain is the country with the most expensive electricity this Saturday in the different European markets. It is followed by Italy (200.18 euros), while in France it costs 182.83 euros and in Germany 139.49 euros per MWh.
-Saturday’s average price is 30.3% more expensive than last Saturday (173.65 euros) and 598% higher than on the same day in 2020 (32.49 euros).
-The average price in September was 156 euros per MWh, the average price in October (up to the 9th) is more than 207 euros. It should be remembered that the average price in October 2020 was 36.59 euros. POLEXIT?- EU faces crisis over Polish court ruling: A Polish court ruling challenging the supremacy of European Union law plunged the EU into an existential crisis on Friday, increasing fears among EU policymakers and many Poles that Poland could eventually leave the bloc. Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal took on the case after Polish Prime Minister Morawiecki asked it whether EU institutions could stop Poland reorganising its judiciary.
Politicians across Europe voiced dismay at the ruling by Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal on Thursday that parts of EU law are incompatible with the Polish constitution, undermining the legal pillar on which the 27-nation EU stands. Draconid meteor shower 2021 will peak October 8: The Draconid shower is active between October 6 and 10. The best evening to watch in 2021 is likely October 8. Try the evenings of October 7 and 9 also. Be sure to watch in a dark sky.
The Draconids are best in the evening, instead of before dawn, because the winged Dragon, the shower’s radiant point, flies highest in the October sky at nightfall. As night passes – no matter where you are on Earth – the radiant point sinks lower in your sky. You don’t have to locate Draco the Dragon to watch the Draconids. These meteors fly every which way through the starry sky, however, in general, the Draconids aren’t a rich shower, unless their parent comet is nearby. They typically produce only about five meteors per hour. Photo:Vittorio Poli. Full article: https://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/everything-you-need-to-know-draconid-meteor-shower/
