Covid Spain- Health notifies 2,287 new positive and 39 deaths in the last 24 hours, with cumulative incidence Wednesday of 49.31 cases per 100,000 inhabitants: {Translation} 03 Nov 2021 – 17:53
-The autonomous communities have notified the Ministry of Health on Wednesday of 2,287 new cases of COVID-19, 1,515 of them diagnosed in the last 24 hours. These figures are lower than on the same day last week, when 2,532 positive cases were reported, which is evidence of the downward trend in the evolution of the pandemic.
-The total number of infections in Spain now stands at 5,019,255 since the start of the pandemic, according to official statistics. The cumulative incidence in the last 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants stands at 49.31, compared to 49.03 yesterday. A total of 23,399 positives have been recorded in the past two weeks.
-In Wednesday’s report, 39 new deaths have been added, compared to 51 last Wednesday. As many as 87,462 people with a positive diagnostic test have died since the virus arrived in Spain, according to data compiled by the ministry. In the last week, 57 people with a confirmed positive COVID-19 diagnosis have died in Spain.
-Currently, there are 1,825 patients admitted for COVID-19 in Spain (1,740 yesterday) and 411 in ICU (405 yesterday). In the last 24 hours, there have been 228 admissions (185 yesterday) and 196 discharges (83 yesterday). The occupancy rate for coronavirus occupied beds stands at 1.48 per cent (1.42 per cent yesterday) and in ICUs at 4.50 per cent (4.44 per cent yesterday).
-Between 24 and 30 October, the autonomous communities carried out 539,126 diagnostic tests, of which 321,442 were PCR and 217,684 antigen tests, with an overall rate per 100,000 inhabitants of 1,146.44.
-Meanwhile, the positivity rate stands at 2.76 percent, compared to 2.71 percent yesterday. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that this figure should be below 5 per cent to consider the spread of the virus as ‘controlled’. The Lancet suggests Spain may have achieved herd immunity thru
a mix of high population exposure to infection and high vaccination rates: {Translation}
-The way in which Spain has dealt with the virus, and especially the high levels of vaccination achieved, has already made international headlines in recent months. Moreover, renowned experts in the field of covid, such as the German virologist Christian Drosten, have provided the reasons why our country has become “the envy of Europe”.
-In his opinion, shared last September in a podcast in which he regularly participates, the key is not that Spaniards have more confidence than Germans or other countries in vaccines, but that they have “a terrible social experience”, since the pandemic caused “many deaths and a real confinement”, a “real blockade where you could only go shopping” and with “soldiers patrolling the streets”. “That is confinement. And we haven’t seen that in Germany,” Drosten said, warning that politicians in his country would have to take “serious measures” if they wanted to achieve a high vaccination rate. Currently in Germany, 66% of the population is fully immunised, 14 points below the 80% in Spain.
-In a similar vein, the scientific journal The Lancet has now pronounced itself in its article “Has Spain reached herd immunity?” where the authors argue that the key to success in Spain may have been a high exposure to the virus which, together with a successful vaccination campaign, has placed us in a situation of low risk in recent months.
-Despite the current slowdown in vaccination, “more than 80% of the Spanish population is fully vaccinated and experts are beginning to believe that the country is on the verge of achieving something that seemed impossible just a few weeks ago: herd immunity,” the publication notes.
-“We still don’t know the exact proportion of the population that needs to be immune to achieve herd immunity,” says the head of the infectious diseases service at the Hospital Virgen de la Macarena in Seville, who believes that Spain at least offers some clues: without restrictions, infections are contained, unlike what has happened in other waves.
-Another important aspect for the authors is the response of adolescents to vaccination (more than 80% are fully vaccinated) and the low incidence of cases among children, despite the fact that they are not yet vaccinated. They also highlight the progress made by some communities – such as Madrid – in eliminating the compulsory use of masks in school playgrounds.
Opening up “without going backwards”.
-Spain also represents an example of resilience in the opinion of the publication, since while other European countries have had to re-impose heavy restrictions (most recently the Netherlands), here the activities continue to recover without any backtracking.
-The UK, after reopening almost all activities, had record daily infection figures. “One in ten children is infected with covid. A situation that cannot be compared to that in Spain,” notes The Lancet. Denmark lifted its restrictions in September and the number of infections has doubled. Norway has also seen an increase in infections after the government took a similar decision. In all these countries, the full vaccination rate is lower than in Spain. SPAIN
Top Covid expert in Spain, Fernando Simón, makes controversial claims, sees no need for a third dose “in general” and says “give them to the third world”: The director of Spain’s Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies said that he believes that a third dose of a coronavirus vaccine is not necessary “in general” because “it seems that immunity lasts for years” and has instead advocated “giving them to third world countries.”
Simón has said this Tuesday (2 November) that during the first wave of the pandemic, in the spring of last year, he believes that Spain registered “2.3 million infections” of Covid -19, and “not 226,000”, as the official statistics of the Ministry of Health still show today.
He also expressed his doubts about the giving the vaccine to those under 12 years of age, a group that “is very little affected by the disease.” Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/covid-expert-spain-20211102184616-nt.html

Spain’s Costa Blanca Authorities Want to Extend the Permitted Period of Stay for UK Citizens: The Alicante Provincial Council President, Carlos Mazon, had a meeting with the Ambassador of Spain to the UK, José Pascual Marco, during which they talked about the situation of British residents in the province after Brexit.
During this meeting, Mazon asked the Ambassador to extend the 90-day period that British citizens are allowed to stay when visiting Spain within any 180 days.
In order to help the area’s travel and tourism sector as well as to provide less complicated post-Brexit travel rules, Mazon has emphasised that they are working on reciprocity so that the allowed staying period for UK nationals can be extended to six months.
