SPAIN

The government justifies the return of face masks outdoors because of Christmas “crowds”: {Translation} 23/12/2021 13:33
-The Government held an extraordinary Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday to approve the Royal Decree Law of the Ministry of Health with the return of the use of face masks outdoors (except for some exceptions such as sports, being in the countryside and with a distance of one and a half metres), as well as the new measures announced yesterday to deal with the sixth wave of the coronavirus.
-The Minister Spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, and the Minister for Health, Carolina Darias, justified the recovery of this prevention instrument at the press conference following the cabinet meeting after strong criticism from the opposition and partners. The Summit of Presidents held yesterday by telematic means was not satisfactory for most of the leaders.
-“What the government has done with the communities is to convince them to use the masks outdoors, we are witnessing greater interaction and mobility and many crowds in the vast majority of cities because of the dates we are in, the masks prevent the spread by aerosols,” explained Darias. The health minister also pointed out that this is a “temporary measure” until the “situation improves”. The accumulated incidence is 784 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and with a very high risk of transmission – yesterday’s data -.
-As ABC explains on Thursday, scientists believe that the return of the masks to the streets is an “absurd” decision and that it is part of a “political theatre” that will contribute to increasing the pandemic fatigue of the public. However, Minister Darias, as did Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez yesterday, insists that it is endorsed by the consensus of the scientific community.
-“We have different scientific studies from different countries, such as the USA and Germany, that speak of the relationship between the spread of aerosols and the role of masks in stopping these contagions,” Darias justified. “In the latest report of the Centre for Coordination of Alerts and Health Emergencies (CCAES) on the Omicron variant establishes a series of recommendations that say that given the expansion of the same and the high transmissibility it is necessary to comply with the control of non-pharmacological measures such as the proper use of masks,” he continued.
-The Popular Party claims that the government “is doing nothing” and is sending a message of confusion. “This is purely a matter of political marketing and the Spanish people are too intelligent to be taken for a ride,” said Ana Pastor, Vice-Secretary for Social Policy of the Popular Party. The spokesman for Ciudadanos, Edmundo Bal, spoke of the “total uselessness” of the measure. Bildu says it “contributes little and confuses a lot”. And Vox campaigned yesterday on Twitter not to put it on. How long before it gets here? Catalan High Court approves curfew and limits on social gatherings: The Catalan regional government on Thursday received court authorization to introduce a series of measure. Starting Friday, a nighttime curfew between 12am and 6am will be introduced in all municipalities with a population of more than 10,000 where the 14-day incidence rate exceeds 250 cases per 100,000. A total of 126 municipalities will be affected by the measure.
Social gatherings will also be limited to 10 people, while capacity at religious, sporting and cultural events will be cut to 70%.
Other restrictions that did not require court authorization will also come into effect at 12am on Friday: the closure of all nighttime venues and a 50% cut to capacity in restaurants. Italy bans New Year events as COVID infections surge: Italy has tightened restrictions to curb surging COVID-19 infections, including banning all public New Year’s Eve celebrations, as daily infections hit a record high, the government said on Thursday.
Health Minister Roberto Speranza said mask wearing would be compulsory outdoors again and ordered people to use the more protective Ffp2 face masks on public transport and in public places, such as theatres, cinemas and at sports events.
In addition, concerts and open-air events will be banned until Jan. 31, and discos and dance clubs will have to shut their doors until that date, in an effort to prevent mass socialising during the holiday period. Turns out, no one wants to talk to Amazon’s Alexa: According to internal Amazon data obtained by Bloomberg, some years see up to 25 percent of new Alexa owners no longer actively using their devices after only two weeks of ownership.
Amazon does recognize that the biggest barriers to growth for its Alexa devices comes down to privacy and usefulness. While many users realize the speakers must listen to their surroundings to accurately respond to commands, many find it frightening to know that Amazon employees can review audio clips, or the speaker may accidentally send out recordings of private conversations.
As for its usefulness, while many features are available, it’s just not feasible to actually use most of them. And despite Amazon continuing to add more features, it’s more annoying than helpful most of the time. Full article: https://mashable.com/article/amazon-alexa-usage-drop
