COVID-19

Covid Spain- Spain has 62,839 cases and 282 deaths, while the incidence drops 201 points to 1,692: {Translation, summary} 9Feb22
-The autonomous communities have notified the Ministry of Health of 62,839 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. These figures are lower than on the same day last week, when 86,222 positive cases were reported, which is evidence of the downward trend in the evolution of the pandemic. Moreover, the cumulative incidence has fallen by 201 since yesterday.
-The total number of infections in Spain now stands at 10,502,141 since the start of the pandemic, according to official statistics. The cumulative incidence in the last 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants stands at 1,692.52 compared to 1,893.35 yesterday. In the past two weeks a total of 802,004 positives have been recorded.
-In Wednesday’s report, 282 new deaths have been added, compared to 224 last Wednesday. As many as 95,213 people have died since the virus arrived in Spain, according to data compiled by the ministry. In the last week, 812 people have died with a confirmed positive test in Spain.
-Currently, there are 14,440 COVID-19 positive patients in hospital throughout Spain (15,206 yesterday) and 1,700 in ICU (1,768 yesterday). In the last 24 hours, there have been 1,396 admissions (1,456 yesterday) and 2,060 discharges (2,142 yesterday). The occupancy rate for coronavirus occupied beds stands at 11.58 per cent (12.20 per cent yesterday) and in ICUs at 18.12 per cent (18.76 per cent yesterday).
-Meanwhile, the positivity rate stands at 30.73 percent, compared to 31.16 percent yesterday. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that this figure should be below 5 per cent to consider the spread of the virus as ‘controlled’. SPAIN

Spain ends the general use of Covid masks outdoors today, but there are exceptions: It is a measure that the autonomous regions and the Ministry of Health agreed last Monday and that the Government approved on Tuesday during a meeting of ministers. The masks, therefore, will no longer be mandatory in outdoor spaces and school playgrounds from this Thursday, 10 February.
However, the order maintains the use of masks “in mass events” and they also remain mandatory on public transport, “specifying that this includes passenger platforms, stations and cable cars.” Full article:

The minimum wage in Spain increases to 1,000 euros per month:
The increase of 35 euros will be retroactive for the month of January. Employers representatives are however unhappy with the new agreement arguing that it is an economically unfavourable time to introduce the increase. Previously the minimum wage was 965 euros per month. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/minimum-wage-spain-20220209162710-nt.html

Slow Courts- Body of US software mogul John McAfee still in Barcelona morgue, seven months after his death: A judge in Spain has ruled that the 75-year-old businessman died by suicide in his prison cell in June 2021 while he awaited extradition to his home country. His family is planning to appeal the decision and request the probe be kept open.
The months-long investigation is not quite over yet, as lawyers for McAfee’s family have appealed the Spanish judge’s decision to provisionally close the case. The provincial court of Barcelona must now decide whether to confirm the judge’s decision or order him to keep the investigation open. The family has argued that the autopsy was incomplete and lacked the “basic elements” to draw definitive conclusions about the cause of death, according to defense sources. Photo:Ng Han Guan (AP). Not half of Andalusian workers even reach the minimum wage: {Translation}
-A report by the Andalusian CCOO warns that Andalusian workers are poorer now than they were ten years ago.
-More than half of the Andalusian working population is paid below the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI), according to a report by CCOO Andalucía.
-The Andalusian CCOO Secretary for Working Conditions, Yolanda Carrasco, pointed out at the presentation of the report that “today being a mileurista (The word is possibly “millionaire” in Andaluz dialect, my translator does not recognize it? -Ed.) has become an objective to be achieved for a large part of the population, as the reforms and measures implemented in the last decade and, especially the 2012 labour reform, have attacked the working class, reducing people’s purchasing power and making us poorer today than we were ten years ago”.
-CCOO Andalucía believes that the new labour reform “rebalances labour relations” and “establishes a regulatory framework that allows progress on the path of improving rights in the face of the detrimental trend of the last decade”.
-Carrasco called on employers to “sit down and negotiate to reach agreements for the coming years that guarantee wage increases”.
-He recalled that the IV Collective Bargaining Agreement included the approval of the minimum wage of 14,000 euros, which is why he considers it “incomprehensible” that the employers are opposed to raising the minimum wage to one thousand euros.
-“The attitude of the employers has been entrenched in the 0% wage increase in many agreements and we must remind them that it is not about earning much more, but about recovering the wages we had before the 2012 reform,” he said.
-Carrasco defended that “contrary to what was thought, employment has risen with the rise in the SMI”.
-CCOO believes that the proposed increase in the SMI will especially benefit young women aged between 16 and 35 who have a temporary contract in the agricultural, services and telecommunications sectors, and will help to reduce the gender pay gap.
-According to the data in this report, in the case of Cádiz, the proportion of workers earning below the Minimum Interprofessional Wage has increased by 11.2% in the last decade, rising from 40% in 2010 to 51.2% in 2020. A breakdown leaves thousands of Movistar customers unable to make or receive calls: The incident began Wednesday mid-morning and is especially affecting corporate clients. Some companies have begun to inform their workers about the “massive problems throughout the national territory” that are preventing normal communications.
The company is working to solve the incident. The breakdown has affected calls, preventing normal conversations and causing various problems. However, data services are left out and internet applications continue to work.
Other messages indicate that the fault is fundamentally affecting corporate clients and calls made with 4G coverage. Some customers notice that even switching to other networks the problem remains. Nuclear fusion heat record a ‘huge step’ in quest for new energy source: The feat announced on Wednesday follows more than two decades of tests and refinements at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy and has been hailed as a “major milestone” on the road to fusion becoming a viable and sustainable low-carbon energy source.
Researchers at the Joint European Torus (JET), a fusion experiment in Oxfordshire, generated 59 megajoules of heat – equivalent to about 14kg of TNT – during a five-second burst of fusion, more than doubling the previous record of 21.7 megajoules set in 1997 by the same facility.

Solar storm disables 40 newly launched SpaceX satellites: A geomagnetic storm triggered by a large burst of radiation from the sun has disabled at least 40 of the 49 satellites newly launched by SpaceX as part of its Starlink internet communications network, the company said.
The announcement, posted on the company’s website on Tuesday, said the satellites were stricken last Friday, Feb. 4, a day after they were launched to a preliminary “low-deployment” orbit about 130 miles (210 km) above Earth.
SpaceX, the Los Angeles area-based rocket company founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has launched hundreds of small satellites into orbit since 2019 as part of Musk’s Starlink service for broadband internet. The company ultimately envisions a constellation of roughly 12,000 satellites in all. Photo of Starlink 5 satellites: Ritzau Scanpix.
