Texas Suing Meta/Fakebook Over Facial Recognition Technology-Seeking Hundreds Of Billions In Penalties: The lawsuit, filed in state court, claims Facebook’s use of facial recognition technology unlawfully “exploited” Texans without consent “billions of times.”
The attorney general’s office said in a news release Facebook recorded users’ facial features in “knowing violation” of a Texas law prohibiting the capture of biometric identifiers, including facial geometry.
-Facebook stopped using facial recognition technology in November after massive backlash from privacy advocates and lawsuits over the practice. A Meta spokesperson blasted the suit, telling Forbes: “These claims are without merit and we will defend ourselves vigorously.”
-“Facebook’s omnipresent empire was built on deception, lies and brazen abuses of Texans’ privacy rights—all for Facebook’s own commercial gain,” the lawsuit said. Canada Trucker Protests Continue- federal government invoking the federal Emergencies Act: At a news conference on Parliament Hill, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivers remarks and responds to questions from reporters. The federal government is invoking the never-before-used federal Emergencies Act in an effort to address ongoing convoy protests that have affected border crossings and cities across the country. The prime minister is joined by Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland as well as ministers David Lametti (justice) Marco Mendicino (public safety) and Bill Blair (emergency preparedness). It gives the government extraordinary – but time limited – powers. The act is still contingent on Parliament’s approval and subject to the protections of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
