SPAIN

The rise in prices triggers inequalities among Spaniards: The 13.2 million Spaniards who are at risk of social exclusion or already live directly below the poverty line, the largest number since the great crisis, are also the ones to whom inflation is passing the greatest bill. The products that have become more expensive are basic foods and energy, precisely those that make up the shopping basket of the poorest. This means that, while families with fewer resources have lost 14% of purchasing power compared to 2021, among those who earn more than 5,000 euros per month, the decrease in purchasing power remains at 11%. This means that inflation has weakened poor households 30% more than the rich. Full article: https://spainsnews.com/the-rise-in-prices-triggers-inequalities-among-spaniards/

Unions demand a salary increase and warn of a tense autumn of financial crisis and protests:
– CCOO and UGT have demonstrated on Wednesday in front of business organisations across the country to demand the maintenance of the purchasing power of wages, and have warned of an increase in social unrest after the summer if the CEOE employers’ organisation continues in its “closed-mindedness”.
Pepe Álvarez has accused Spanish companies of transferring inflation to prices in order to “earn in one year everything they could not earn with covid.” “They do it because they want to continue hoarding wealth for a few”, said the general secretary of the UGT, and has demanded that the employers distribute these benefits in the form of a salary increase for their workers.
– In addition to requesting a wage increase in collective agreements, the unions have expressed their intention to continue reviewing the Interprofessional Minimum Wage (SMI), which at the beginning of the year rose to 1,000 euros per month. Álvarez has insisted the SMI must be reviewed after six months, something that becomes more urgent in the current inflation situation, with the CPI at 10.2%, according to the advance data for June. ANDALUCIA

Saharan dust haze and high temperatures threaten the south of Spain again: The State weather agency, Aemet, has issued yellow and amber alerts as the mercury is expected to soar in parts of Andalucía on Thursday and Friday
– A new calima is expected in Malaga province again. Although an episode as virulent as the one that happened last March is not expected, the Saharan dust will once again flirt with the area. The weather maps show that it will be experienced mainly in the eastern part of the province, around Nerja and Vélez-Málaga.
– In Andalucía this latest episode of haze will be especially noticeable in Almeria province and on the coast of Granada, as it will travel along the coast from east to west until Thursday. NERJA

Nerja regulates the access of vehicles to the beaches of Maro, and enables bus, shuttle and car parks: {Translation}
– With the aim of improving safety conditions for users, Nerja Town Hall has regulated vehicle access to the beaches of Maro.
– “Due to the large number of visitors to the beach of Maro and La Caleta during the summer season, and the traffic problems caused by bad parking and occasional security problems, the Town Hall has regulated access, and has also set up a parking area and a shuttle bus,” explained Francisco Arce.
– He also informed that this limitation of vehicle access to the beach does not affect public transport or emergency services, as well as the owners and tenants of land in the area, who must go to the Local Police Headquarters to obtain authorisation.
– With regard to the public bus service, Francisco Arce detailed that “it will be in operation during the summer season, from 10.00 to 20.00 hours, at a price of 1.5 euros each way”.
– On the other hand, the councillor for Municipal Services, Gema García, reported that to facilitate parking, both for locals and visitors, a temporary parking area has been set up near the access control to the beaches, which will have space for more than 100 vehicles and will be managed by the Taller de la Amistad association. MALAGA

High inflation and low wages cause protests in Malaga: {Translation, summary} 06 July, 2022 – 18:09
– Sky-high inflation and low wages. The combination is horrible for the economy of any family, especially for those with fewer resources, and it is taking its toll on the middle classes as well. Going to the petrol station, shopping at the supermarket, to a restaurant, to a clothes shop or planning a trip has become a nightmare because for the same money you get far less goods. And you don’t even have to leave your home to take the hit. It comes in the electricity bill, the gas bill, the mortgage, the rent and it will come in the community fees.
– Social tension is growing and the first to take the first public step of protest have been the trade unions. They have organised this Wednesday a day of protest all over Spain with a slogan that leaves no room for doubt: Wage or Conflict. In the case of Malaga about 150 people, mostly belonging to CCOO and UGT, have gathered at the door of the Confederation of Employers of Malaga to demand wage increases to cope with the sharp increase in prices, which in June is at 10.2% year-on-year in the country according to the progress of the National Institute of Statistics.
– “We are very concerned about the situation of inflation we have and in the horizon we are facing with the war in Ukraine and the rise in the price of raw materials, fuel and energy,” said the secretary general of UGT in Malaga, Soledad Ruiz, who added that “there has been aid for families that we consider insufficient”. Ruiz stated that prices have risen by 25% in a key sector for the Malaga economy, such as the hotel and catering industry, and “we would like to draw attention to the fear that is being generated”. The maximum representative of UGT in Malaga has regretted that the Spanish employers rejected the wage review clause or “an absolutely reasonable three-year wage increase” requested by the unions. “It is a monumental mistake to have workers in a situation like this without there being wage agreements”, said Ruiz, who believes that “the time has come to limit prices and to propose new situations because we are not going to resign ourselves to the fact that the crisis will once again fall on the workers and conflict will increase”.
– The secretary for Employment and Training at CCOO in Malaga, María José Prados, stressed that the average wage in Malaga does not reach 17,000 euros per year and “we are seeing that there is significant speculation on prices because the big companies continue to make profits in this country”. The CCOO demands that companies that do not comply with collective agreements or that do not raise the minimum wage should not be able to access public aid.
– The situation is looking bleak and there are already many families who are having a really hard time. A report by the Consumers’ Organisation (OCU) published on Wednesday points out that one in four families is finding it difficult to cover their daily needs, 34% of citizens have no savings margin and that inflation is particularly affecting families with two or more dependent children, the unemployed, those living on rented accommodation and people aged between 45 and 59. UK

UK supermarket warning as potentially deadly superbug found in pork: Supermarket warnings have been issued as a potentially deadly superbug is found in British pork. Tests found more than 10% of sampled products resistant to antibiotic used to treat serious illnesses in humans. The probe discovered that some British pork has been infected with enterococci bacteria. The contaminated products included some pork sold under the “Red Tractor assured” label, it is claimed. But some organic lines were also impacted. This bacteria can be dangerous as it can cause issues such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), according to reports.

Boris Johnson rejects Scottish independence referendum request reveals Sturgeon: In what Sturgeon argued could be “one of his last acts as PM”, Johnson wrote a letter to her which revealed that he has rejected her request for powers to be devolved to the Scottish Government. In order to legally hold a referendum, the Scottish Parliament must be given the legislative authority to do so via a Section 30 Order. While Johnson denying the First Minister’s request is not unexpected, it does present a significant obstacle to independence.
– Sturgeon shared a copy of the letter written by the Prime Minister. In it, he states: “Thank you for your letter of 28 June, regarding Scottish independence. “I have carefully considered the arguments you set out for a transfer of power from the UK Parliament to the Scottish Parliament to hold another referendum on independence. As our country faces unprecedented challenges at home and abroad, I cannot agree that now is the time to return to a question, which was clearly answered by the people of Scotland in 2014.”

ENERGY CRISIS

Russia Shutting Two Major Oil Pipelines! We could be in for a very rough winter. Shortages of electricity, petrol, water & food are impending, as inflation exacerbates the problems. Could we see these necessities subject to rationing? Only time will tell…

Russian court suspends oil flows through Caspian pipeline: A Russian court ordered the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), which transports oil from Kazakhstan via one of the world’s largest pipelines, to suspend operations over paperwork on tackling oil spills, adding to international supply concerns. Full article: https://www.marketscreener.com/quote/stock/PUBLIC-JOINT-STOCK-COMPAN-13491337/news/Russian-court-suspends-oil-flows-through-Caspian-pipeline-40909544/

Russia is set to switch off the gas for work on a Nord Stream 1 pipeline – and Germany fears the worst:
– Russia is poised to temporarily shut down the Nord Stream 1 pipeline – the European Union’s biggest piece of gas import infrastructure – for annual maintenance. The works have stoked fears of further disruption to gas supplies that would undermine the bloc’s efforts to prepare for winter. Some fear the Kremlin could use planned maintenance works to turn off the taps for good. The summer maintenance activities on the pipeline, which runs under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, are scheduled to take place from July 11 through to July 21.
– Analysts at political risk consultancy Eurasia Group agree. If supply “doesn’t come back after maintenance because President Putin plays games or wants to hit Europe while it hurts, then the plan to fill up gas storage by the end of summer will probably not work,” Henning Gloystein, director of energy, climate and resources at Eurasia Group, told CNBC via telephone.

Physicists see electron whirlpools for the first time: Long predicted but never observed, this fluid-like electron behavior could be leveraged for low-power next-generation electronics. “Electron vortices are expected in theory, but there’s been no direct proof, and seeing is believing,” says Leonid Levitov, professor of physics at MIT. “Now we’ve seen it, and it’s a clear signature of being in this new regime, where electrons behave as a fluid, not as individual particles.” Full article: https://news.mit.edu/2022/electron-whirlpools-physics-0706
