A thousand more infections on Monday than a week ago and an increase in Covid admissions in Andalusia: {Translation} Updated: 12/07/2021, 17:02
-Andalusia has exceeded three thousand cases of coronavirus infection this Monday, with 48-hour figures, an unprecedented barrier in the last two months and almost a thousand more positive cases than those counted on Monday of last week. The Regional Ministry of Health reports 3,169 new cases and only one death on Monday, a day in which hospital admissions increased once again.
-The 14-day average cumulative incidence rate is almost twenty points higher than last Saturday, at 279 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The 7-day rate, at 150 cases, augurs a progressive worsening of these values.
-Almeria has the lowest 14-day incidence rate in the community with 146 cases, followed by Seville (179) and Huelva (215). The rest of the provinces exceed the extreme risk level of 250 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with Malaga as the province with the greatest impact in this fifth wave, reaching 442 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Monday. Its rate at 7 days exceeded that of 253 infections. Most municipalities on the Costa del Sol already exceed the rate of 500 cases.
-As for the pressure on health care, it continues to rise, although more moderately than the number of infections. This Monday there are 545 Covid patients admitted, 32 more than last Saturday. Of the total, 118 are in ICU, three more than last weekend’s statistics. U.S. to announce new warning on J&J coronavirus vaccine for autoimmune disorder: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to announce a new warning on Johnson & Johnson’s (JNJ.N) coronavirus vaccine related to a rare autoimmune disorder. About 100 preliminary reports of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) have been detected in the United States after vaccination with J&J shot, mostly in men, many of whom were 50 or older.
The condition has been linked in the past to vaccinations – most notably to a vaccination campaign during a swine flu outbreak in the United States in 1976, and decades later to the vaccine used during the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic.
Last week, European regulators recommended a similar warning for AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 shot, which is based on a similar technology as Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine. Use of the vaccine had already been linked to a very rare, potentially life threatening blood clotting condition. WHO warns against mixing and matching COVID vaccines:
The World Health Organization’s chief scientist on Monday advised against people mixing and matching COVID-19 vaccines from different manufacturers, calling it a “dangerous trend” since there was little data available about the health impact. “It’s a little bit of a dangerous trend here. We are in a data-free, evidence-free zone as far as mix and match,” Soumya Swaminathan told an online briefing. Valencia region paves way for how curfews can return to Spain without state of alarm powers:
-The regional government headed by Ximo Puig has received the backing of the Valencian district attorney’s office regarding the return of Covid-19 measures such as the curfew and limits on social gatherings as a means of curbing rising infections in the eastern territory.
-In early June, Spain’s Supreme Court ruled that these two types of measures should not be implemented since the state of alarm ended on May 9th, considering that such restrictions encroach on fundamental freedoms and are not proportional to the whole territory.
-But on this occasion Valencia’s public prosecutor’s office has considered the limit of ten people in public or private settings across the region as well as the 1am to 6am curfew in high-risk municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants to be balanced and corresponding to the region’s epidemiological situation.
-The Generalitat Valenciana government still needs the backing of the region’s high court, but it has already ruled in favour of the curfew twice in the region after the state of alarm (UPDATE: On Monday afternoon, Valencia high court ruled in favour of reintroducing the curfew and limits on social gatherings in Valencia).
