Halting Erosion using Vetiver
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment depending on the current travel restrictions. Please email or call first. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa.
Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture.
Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites.
In the 2 photos below you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.
We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge.
Here is a link to a short video showing the results.
https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo
We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.

Fakebook Log-in Problems: {by Editor} Many readers are reporting they cannot sign into Facebook using a web browser, including myself. The FB mobile device apps do not appear to have this problem. As far as I have figured out, it has to do with the new anti-tracking & anti-cookie features that have recently been added to browsers like Chrome, Firefox, etc. As to why it happens to some people and not others, I am still investigating.
The data of yours that FB sells to advertisers is worth 10x as much if it has your location included. Tracker blockers prevent FB from collecting your location. Cookie blockers prevent FB from collecting lists of websites you visit and searches you do. Evidently, if you won’t let FB have your location and lists of every website/search you visit, they are not interested in giving you access. Note, if you are using a mobile device FB app, then they already know your location. That is why the app is not having this problem.
FB support has been useless in helping fix this.
My solution was to install a web browser without the anti-tracking features. I am now forced to use Pale Moon web browser to access FB. It is a slow browser, but it works with FB. See Pale Moon here: http://www.palemoon.org/

COVID-19
Andalusia adds 88 hospitalised in a single day due to Covid, although the number of deaths remains at a low level: {Translation} Updated: 13/07/2021, 17:07
-Andalusia has added 88 new Covid hospitalisations in 24 hours, raising the number of patients admitted from 545 yesterday to 633 on Tuesday, 122 of them in the ICU. This is the biggest rise since last February in a single day and highlights that the fifth wave, although less severe for now in the pressure of care, also has an effect on patients in need of medical care after contracting the coronavirus.
-In addition, the community remains this Tuesday for the second consecutive day in the vicinity of 3,000 infections. It has recorded 2,906 cases, which has raised the incidence rate to almost 300 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants on 14 days, almost double what the community had only a month ago.
-The one-week incidence rate has not improved either. In fact, it has risen to 161 points, which augurs a few days ahead where the pandemic, far from diminishing, is expected to grow.
-Where there is still no reflection of the growth of the fifth wave is in the number of deaths. There are 5 this Tuesday, so that Andalusia has spent 14 days below ten deaths per day. In total, 10,248 people have died in the region since the start of the health crisis. Covid Axarquia- Torrox is the only municipality on the coast of Axarquia with less than 200 cases of incidence: {Translation} Updated 13 July, 2021
-The region registers this Tuesday 82 new infections of coronavirus and the Axarquia Health District enters extreme risk by exceeding the incidence rate of 250 cases.
-The levels of transmission of the virus remain very high and in just two days more cases have been confirmed (274) than those reported in the whole of last week (240).
-Fortunately, the region has had another day with no deaths due to the disease, making 13 days without any deaths since Wednesday 30 June. This Tuesday we must also add another 3 people recovered from COVID-19.
-With regard to the new positives in the last 24 hours, the following have been registered: 33 in Rincón de la Victoria; 30 in Vélez-Málaga; 7 in Torrox; 5 in Nerja; 2 in Frigiliana; and 1 in Algarrobo, Benamocarra, Periana, La Viñuela and Moclinejo.
-As for people who have overcome the disease, 3 have been reported in Vélez-Málaga.
-The incidence in the Axarquia Health District (which includes Casabermeja) is at 262.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 18.8 points more than yesterday Monday (243.3) and 144.6 more than a week ago (117.5). The district is again at extreme risk after exceeding the rate of 250 infections per 100,000 inhabitants. It had not done so since 15 February. Meanwhile, in the Malaga Health District (which includes Macharaviaya, Moclinejo, Rincon de la Victoria and Totalan, as well as Malaga city and Almogia) the incidence is 479.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 52.3 points more than Monday (427.1) and 206.3 points more than a week ago (273.1). It is also at extreme risk.
-Of the five coastal municipalities of Axarquia, Torrox is the only one with an incidence of COVID-19 below 200 cases with a rate of 183.9 infections, at high risk. Also at this level is Nerja (231.7), while Algarrobo (503.4), Vélez-Málaga (312) and Rincón de la Victoria (305.5) are at extreme risk.
-The total number of cases with active infection (PDIA) in the last 14 days in the Axarquia region is distributed as follows:
257 in Vélez-Málaga; 149 in Rincón de la Victoria; 49 in Nerja; 33 in Torrox and Algarrobo; 14 in Riogordo; 11 in Colmenar; 7 in Cómpeta and Moclinejo; 6 in Frigiliana; 5 in Benamocarra, Comares and Periana; 4 in Sayalonga; 3 in Almáchar; 2 in Benamargosa and La Viñuela; and 1 in Alcaucín, Canillas de Aceituno, Canillas de Albaida, Iznate and Macharaviaya.
-Only 9 municipalities in La Axarquía have not registered cases of COVID-19 at least in the last 14 days. They are Alfarnate, Alfarnatejo, Árchez, Arenas, Cútar, El Borge, Salares, Sedella and Totalán.
-In total, since the beginning of the pandemic in the Axarquia region, 11,188 positive cases have been registered to date, of which 10,243 have been cured and 191 have died. SPAIN
Spain set to authorise the sale of coronavirus self-diagnosis tests without the need for a medical prescription: The authorisation for the sale in pharmacies will be for an “in vitro diagnostic” test, and it comes after a favourable report was presented last Friday and saw no basis to prevent the commercialisation of these products, which are already distributed in many European countries.
The decree will allow these tests to be advertised, so it is likely that in a matter of days they will appear on television screens across the country. Full article: http://www.surinenglish.com/national/202107/13/spain-authorise-sale-coronavirus-20210713183000.html
What are self-diagnostic Covid-19 tests and how reliable are they?: {Translation}
-The government will authorise the sale in pharmacies (without prescription) of self-diagnostic antigen tests, which are used to easily detect covid with the aim of more quickly locating new positive cases in view of the increase in incidence in recent weeks.
-According to the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), the test should be performed during the first five days after the onset of symptoms, when the viral load is very high and, therefore, the virus is better detected.
WHICH SELF-TEST SHOULD I USE?
-The AEMPS recommends the use of self-testing tests that have a specificity of 97% and a sensitivity of 90%, and the test must be labelled with the CE marking followed by the four-digit number of the notified body that assessed it.
WHEN SHOULD I BE TESTED?
-During the first seven days of infection or within five days of onset of symptoms. This is when the viral load is at its highest and most detectable.
WHERE TO BUY?
-These tests are sold exclusively in pharmacies.
WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO GET THE TEST RIGHT?
-The manufacturer’s directions and instructions for use must be followed carefully to ensure that the test is carried out properly. The test may be affected if the indicated procedure has not been followed.
HOW DO I KNOW THE RESULT?
-If the test result is positive, the test (T) and control (C) lines will be marked. If the result is negative, only the control line (C) will be marked. The test must have the control line (C) clearly visible. If it does not appear, the test is defective and therefore invalid.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THE RESULT IS POSITIVE?
-If the test is positive, regardless of whether the patient has symptoms or not, isolation must be started immediately and the health services of the autonomous community where the patient is located must be contacted.
WHAT IF THE RESULT IS NEGATIVE?
-If the result is negative, i.e. only the control line (C) remains visible in the test, the patient should not rule out the disease. This negative result may mean that the viral load is too low to be detected.
-In this case, the AEMPS recommends isolation and contacting the health services of your autonomous community. Source, Spanish: https://www.cope.es/actualidad/sociedad/noticias/que-son-cuanta-fiabilidad-tienen-los-test-autodiagnostico-20210713_1399688
