Recommendations & Requests

Exhibition recommendation: During July the Sala de Exposiciones in Mezquitilla is showing a local man’s 40-year collection of his geological finds along the coast. The exhibits include some striking fossils, incredible shells and trays of diverse rocks as well as wonderful bones together with other, more quirky, pieces. Javier has an encyclopaedic knowledge of his collection which he will willing share with you (in Spanish). Even without his explanations, if you’re interested in the geology of this stretch of coast, it’s worth a look.
The exhibition is open from 11am until 2pm and 7pm until 10pm from Wednesdays to Sundays.
The building is opposite Sala Ottawa; it’s housed within the Correos building (to the right in the photo).

Covid Spain- Incidence rate of Covid-19 in Spain shoots up to 436 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a level last seen in February:
-The circulation of the virus during this fifth wave is ever higher across the country, and the infection rate now stands at the same level as it was in February, when the third wave – which reached a peak of 900 cases per 100,000 inhabitants – was falling.
-In the last 24 hours, the minister reported that nearly 44,000 cases had been detected while 13 new victims had been added to the overall death toll.
-The situation is particularly serious at the moment among younger people, where the incidence exceeds 1,000 cases per 100,000 among adolescents and the 20-29 group.

Covid Malaga- The increase in the Covid rate in Malaga slows down, but there are 33 hospitalised in one day: {Translation} Updated: 14 July, 2021 – 13:59
-The Covid rate slows down in the province of Malaga. It is growing, but slightly less than in previous days. However, the number of hospitalisations is high. Only in one day there are 33 admissions due to serious cases. This Wednesday there are no deaths, but the number of infections is close to 900.
-The Department of Health and Families reports 33 hospitalisations in the province in the last few hours. In the three working days since the beginning of the week there have already been 104 admissions, a number that would fill two thirds of the rooms of a regional hospital such as the one in Ronda. That is only adding the new admissions between Monday and Wednesday. So the pressure of care continues to increase. There are currently 208 patients in the Malaga hospitals, 28 more than on Tuesday, given that although there were 33 admissions, there have also been discharges. Of the 208 hospitalised, 31 are in ICU, eight more than the previous day.
-For its part, the rate continues to rise. On this day it rose 28.7 points at provincial level, from 482.2 positives per 100,000 inhabitants on the previous day to 510.9 on Wednesday. It is growing, but less than the previous days when it rose 91 points (Monday) and almost 40 (Tuesday). Malaga is no exception. Andalusia is also experiencing an increase in the incidence of the more contagious delta variant, which is already the predominant one.
-The autonomous community recorded an increase in its rate, but in this case by 16 points, from 298.1 to 314.1. In other words, in Malaga the rate is higher than the average for the region. In the capital, the incidence also continues its upward trend. From Tuesday to Wednesday it increased by 23.7 points, rising from 497.0 to 520.7. In any case, the three territories are at extreme risk of spreading Covid, which is when there are more than 250 positives per 100,000 inhabitants.
-With regard to new infections, there are slightly fewer than the previous day. There are 861 compared to 1,031 on Tuesday. But the daily figures that are being recorded are four times higher than those reported just a month ago. Behind this expansion is the delta strain that has become predominant and more contagious. Since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020, 115,796 cases have been recorded in the province.
-The good news is that no deaths are reported. So the total number of people who have died with the virus in Malaga remains at 1,683. On the other hand, with the 33 hospitalisations reported by the Health Administration, the accumulated number of people admitted to hospital in the province is 8,605 in these fifteen months of epidemiological crisis. Of these, 811 have been admitted to intensive care due to their seriousness.
-Those cured – as usual in recent days – are far fewer than those newly infected. Almost three times less, with 292 compared to 861 positives. Since March 2020, 104,777 patients have overcome the disease. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/aumento-tasa-Covid-Malaga-ralentiza-hospitalizados_0_1592241492.html

SPAIN

Spain’s first coronavirus home lockdown was illegal, rules top court: The strict home lockdown, ordered to control the spread of the coronavirus during Spain’s first state of alarm, was unconstitutional a top court has ruled – by six votes in favour and five against.
In a historic judgement the Constitutional Court has decided that the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez suspended fundamental rights rather than just bringing in a limitation of them, as allowed by the state of alarm.
The court ruling could open the door to a wave of possible lawsuits and the annulment of many of the 1.2 million fines issued during the time that the order lasted. Full article:

ANDALUCIA

Andalusia opens the vaccination to those of 25 years or more from this Thursday: {Translation, summary}
Thus, those who are 28, 27, 26 and 25 years old will be able to make an appointment from this Thursday. And “before the end of July”, said the minister, all Andalusians over the age of 20 will be able to make an appointment.
These people, as is already the case for those up to the age of 39, will be able to receive a dose from Moderna or Pfizer. Appointments can be made through the usual channels. That is: through the Salud Reponde mobile app, ClickSalud+ or by calling the health centre. The Health Department reminds us that it is not necessary to make an appointment for the second dose, as this is taken at the time of the first jab. Netherlands to reimpose work-from-home for those who can do so, as infections soar: The Netherlands will reimpose work-from-home guidelines due to soaring COVID-19 infections, just weeks after lifting them, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte told parliament on Wednesday.
Last Friday, the Netherlands reintroduced restrictions on bars, restaurants and nightclubs to stop a spate of infections among young adults, just two weeks after most lockdown measures were lifted.
The Dutch government has also cancelled all multi-day festivals and events with large crowds as part of the curbs being imposed until Aug. 14. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/netherlands-reimpose-work-from-home-infections-soar-rutte-2021-07-14/

WhatsApp Bully Tactics Called Out- European consumer organizations file complaint against WhatsApp:
-Since the beginning of this year, WhatsApp has been bombarding its users with recurring, intrusive notifications to accept changes to its terms of use and privacy policy. If they don’t, the company threatens to deny them access to the service.
-According to the consumer organizations, the content of the notifications, their supporting documents, and their frequent repetition puts unnecessary pressure on consumers and hinders their freedom of choice. This makes them contrary to European rules.
-The conditions are also not transparent and difficult to understand. Especially when it comes to the transfer of personal data to Facebook and other companies. This makes it impossible for consumers to foresee the consequences for their privacy if they consent. Full article:

Facebook will now allow group admins to designate which members are “experts”, creating a digital caste system: These so called Group Experts will have a badge next to their name emblazoned with the proof of their elevated status. This badge will show up on posts, comments, and in the Q&A feature.
Group Experts will be selected by group administrators, and experts will only be given this extraordinary power once they have accepted the nomination. Admins can revoke the expert status, as well.
While the “expert” tag designates the trust of admins, it doesn’t objectively qualify someone as a real expert. (FB, so obsessed with truth and fact checking, is now going to allow group admins, who may not be experts on anything themselves, decide who IS an expert on a subject? What could possibly go wrong with that? -Ed.) Full article: https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/facebook-groups-can-now-designate-group-experts/ar-AAM7vuf
