Halting Erosion using Vetiver:
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment. Please email or call first. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa.
Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture.
Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites.
In the 2 photos below you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.
We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge.
Here is a link to a short video showing the results.
https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo
We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.
To see more images of Vetiver go to this link.

Recommendations & Requests

Email: People must check their spam/junk folders on a regular basis. The big 3 email companies, Gmail / Yahoo / Hotmail, have declared war on the smaller email providers by often designating emails from other email providers as spam, regardless of the content.
If you receive an email from a trusted sender, and it is in your spam / junk folder, move it to your inbox using the “move to” button in your email toolbar. After that, new emails from that sender will go to your inbox. -Ed.

Thanks: Thank you to the 12 kind Dígamites who took the trouble to reply to my request for current travel info, which has eased my mind considerably – I am really grateful to you all!
Thank you also to Naythan for maintaining this forum, which enables the dissemination of such valuable information.

DoctorLaptop Message- Prices of New Computers & Parts Rising Again:
I research new computer availability almost daily. After a recent dip in prices of computers, they have shot back up and are now more expensive than ever!
It is very rare to find a decent laptop under €500 now, and those are basic, entry level models, with Spanish keyboards. A solid mid-line laptop from a major brand will cost over €700.
In an effort to provide an affordable yet powerful product I am focused on mini PCs. I buy brand new units, and upgrade them to specs comparable to powerful new laptops.
Some advantages of mini PCs are: you can plug in an UK keyboard, these use very little power (10Watts vs 90W for a typical laptop, or 250-500W for a tower), and these run cool even in the summer heat.
In the following days I will have 2 of these mini PCs available for sale. One is ready now, see it in the For Sale section. Even the prices on these mini PCs and the extra parts are rising, so get yours now, I may not be able to offer these again at this price!

-The autonomous communities have notified the Ministry of Health on Tuesday of 134,942 new cases of COVID-19, 79,601 of them diagnosed in the last 24 hours. These figures are higher than on the same day last week, when 117,775 positive cases were reported, which is evidence of the upward trend in the evolution of the pandemic.
-The total number of infections in Spain now stands at 7,592,242 since the start of the pandemic, according to official statistics. The cumulative incidence in the last 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants stands at 3,042.11 points, compared to 2989.47 points yesterday, Monday. A total of 1,441,506 positives have been recorded in the past two weeks.
-In Monday’s report, 247 new deaths have been added, compared to 116 on Monday. As many as 90,383 people with a positive diagnostic test have died since the virus arrived in Spain, according to data collected by the ministry.
-Currently, there are 16,555 patients admitted for COVID-19 across Spain (16,496 on Monday) and 2,200 in ICU (2,200 on Monday). In the last 24 hours there have been 2,238 admissions (2,023 Mondays) and 2,153 discharges (997 Mondays). The occupancy rate of beds occupied by coronavirus stands at 13.34 percent (13.40% Monday) and in ICUs at 23.50 percent (23.58% Monday).
-The autonomous communities have performed 2,087,443 diagnostic tests, of which 915,509 were PCR and antigen tests, with an overall rate per 100,000 inhabitants of 4,438.89.
-Meanwhile, the positivity rate stands at 38.31 percent, compared to 37.12 percent on Monday. SPAIN

Treat Covid like the flu and return to normal without masks or restrictions, urge Spanish family doctors: In a statement published on 11 January, The Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine said, “Neither the health system nor society as a whole can afford to continue testing asymptomatic patients or those with mild symptoms and isolating all those who are positive, because of the consequences for society and the economy due to the massive absence from work of healthy people. We must end the exceptionality. Covid-19 must be treated like other diseases. Acquired immunity and the arrival of Omicron allow it.”
Regarding current restrictions including the use of masks, they added, “At the present time it no longer makes sense to maintain them and their elimination should be planned, starting with the absurd return of the mandatory use of masks in outdoor spaces.” Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/treat-covid-like-20220111121707-nt.html

Electricity price in Spain doubles in just ten days: In the space of just 10 days, the wholesale price of electricity in Spain has risen from 112 euros/MWh to 223 euros/MWh.
Since 6 January, the cost of electricity has not fallen below 200 euros/MWh, except for Sunday 9 January when it cost 120 euros due to lower demand for electricity at weekends.
Compared to last year, the price of electricity on the wholesale market is 170.6 per cent more expensive than the price on 11 January 2021 when it cost just 82.45 euros/MWh even though Spain was in the grips of storm Filomena. Companies with between 50 and 100 workers have two months to approve their equality plans: Entering the final stretch for companies with between 50 and 100 workers to approve their equality plans. On March 7, the three-year adaptation period that the first Pedro Sánchez Government gave to these companies, some 12,000 active according to INE data, ends to have the measure ready.
These plans seek to identify the challenges in terms of equality in the workplace, such as the wage gap or the so-called “glass ceiling”, and solve them through concrete measures. Failure to comply with this obligation is a serious offense, sanctioned with fines ranging from 751 to 7,500 euros, each year more persecuted by the labor authority. Hefty fines for riders who cycle across pedestrian crossings in Spain: “Contrary to what many cyclists think, bikes do not have priority on pedestrian crossings. To cross a pedestrian crossing, it is mandatory to get off the bike and cross it on foot,” the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) warned. Photo:SUR. EUROPE

All You Need to Know About COVID-19 Vaccination Passports’ New Validity Rules for EU Travel: All vaccinated travellers who plan to visit the European Union and Schengen Area countries from February 1 need to check whether their vaccination is valid for travel to these countries, based on the dates their vaccines were administered.
By February 1, all the EU and Schengen countries are set to put an expiry date of nine months at most for all COVID-19 vaccination certificates, the validity of which can be extended as soon as travellers have their booster shots administered. However there are a few exceptions. In Greece, vaccine certificates will remain valid for seven months only regardless of the type of the vaccine. Poland Pushes Back Against EU Bully Tactics: The European Union executive is set to demand that Poland pay around 70 million euros ($80 million) of fines in the coming weeks for failing to scrap its system for disciplining judges, sources have told Reuters.
The dispute is one of many battles pitting Poland against the EU, which accuses the nationalist government in Warsaw of backsliding on democratic standards, including the independence of the judiciary. Warsaw denies the charge.
Asked about the case, a deputy Polish justice minister last week accused the EU of making “illegal demands” and said Warsaw would not give in to “blackmail”. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/eu-will-demand-poland-pay-fine-disciplining-judges-2022-01-11/

“I Have Nothing To Hide” Argument For Lazy Internet Security Practices Is A Dangerous Attitude: {Naythan} It’s very simple. It is called IDENTITY THEFT! If you don’t use basic security practices, you are far more likely to have your identity stolen. Hackers pretending to be you can then withdraw funds, take out loans/creditcards, and even transfer your home title, to then take out multiple mortgages in your name, and you probably won’t find out until the damage is done. Home title theft is among the top hacker activities these days.
The basics to protect yourself:
-Sign out of your email and social media accounts when not using them.
-Never post personal info on social media.
-Use a VPN, and a premium one, not a free version. Free VPNs only change your IP address, they do not encrypt your data.
-Do not open emails from strangers.
-Delete old emails and WhatsApp conversations, do not let thousands of old emails/conversations accumulate in your account. These will contain a library of your personal details if maintained. Why do you think Gmail gives you so much free storage? I promise you it is not for your benefit.
-Use strong passwords and change them annually. A strong password has no real words or names. It should be a jumble of small letters, capital letters, numbers and punctuation marks. Yes, all of those. And a minimum of 13 characters long.
-Use different passwords for each account.
-Avoid “password manager” apps. These get hacked regularly, exposing all your passwords in a single hack attack.
-Use 2 email accounts, one for trusted personal contacts, the other for everything else. Having a 3rd email to use when signing up for possibly insecure activities such as online games, subscriptions, greeting eCards and software downloads is a good idea. Any free service should be suspect. If something online is free, then in most cases you are the product being sold to their business partners.

The New Trend in Healthcare- Do-It-Yourself: Frustrated with an overburdened health system, more consumers are turning to gadgets, home kits, apps and monitors for tasks and tests previously handled by trained medical workers. They are monitoring their own blood pressure, conducting EKGs, tracking blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and pricking their own fingers for blood tests normally done at the doctor’s.
Many doctors support patients taking more responsibility for their own care, but warn that too much DIY without expert guidance could miss important health problems. Despite those concerns, more physicians are recommending that patients shoulder at least some additional work, because staff shortages and worker burnout mean that patients often face long wait times for appointments and overloaded care providers.
