SPAIN

Banking giant Barclays to close all accounts of Brits living in Spain: {Full article from thelocal.es}
– Customers of Barclays Bank who are living in Spain and other EU countries have been receiving letters telling them that their UK accounts will be closed by the end of the year.
– A number of readers of The Local’s network of news websites have contacted us to report receiving either letters or messages in their online banking telling them that their accounts would be closed because of their residency in Spain or in other countries in the EU.
– A Barclays spokesperson told The Local: “As a ring fenced bank, our Barclays UK products are designed for customers within the UK.” “We will no longer be offering services to personal current account or savings customers (excluding ISAs) within the European Economic Area. We are contacting impacted customers to give them advance notice of this decision and outline the next steps they need to take.”
– Customers are being given six months to make alternative arrangements. The changes affect all personal current accounts or savings accounts, but do not affect ISAs, loans or mortgages.
– During the Brexit transition period Barclays closed Barclaycard accounts of customers in Spain, but did not indicate any changes to standard bank accounts.
– Around the same time several other British high street banks began closing accounts of British customers who live in the EU, although with the exception of Barclaycard customers in Spain who were largely spared.
– Many UK nationals who live in Spain maintain at least one UK bank account – in addition to a Spanish account – sometimes just for savings but others use their accounts regularly to receive income such as pensions or income from rental property or – for remote workers – to receive income for work done in the UK. Not having a UK bank account can make financial transactions in the UK more complicated or incur extra banking fees.
– Since Brexit, the UK banking sector no longer has access to the ‘passporting’ system which allows banks to operate in multiple EU countries without having to apply for a separate banking licence for each country. And it seems that many UK high street banks are deciding that the extra paperwork is not worth the hassle and are withdrawing completely from certain EU markets.
– When British banks began withdrawing services from customers in the EU back in 2020, a UK government spokesman told British newspaper The Times that “the provision of banking services is a commercial decision for firms based on a number of factors” so Brits in Spain probably shouldn’t hold their breath for any help from that direction. Article posted in full as the website blocks many visitors for some unknown reason: https://www.thelocal.es/20220728/banking-giant-barclays-to-close-all-accounts-of-brits-living-in-spain/

Cracking Down on Fake News- ETIAS Travel Authorization for EU Does Not Become Mandatory on January 1, 2023: With the date on which the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) becomes mandatory for travellers from about 60 world countries travelling to the European Union and Schengen Area countries approaching, the number of fake news regarding the new scheme is also increasing.
– In recent days, many online media, even some famous and widely-read international ones, have reported that the ETIAS will become mandatory on January 1, 2023, thus causing confusion amongst travellers who will need the ETIAS.
– The statement is not true, as the ETIAS is set to become fully effective only at the beginning of the fifth month of 2023, on May 1, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
– Americans, British citizens, Canadians, Albanians, Emiratis, and more will be subject to the ETIAS requirement nine months from now.
– According to SchengenVisaInfo.com, the ETIAS authorization application procedures will be simple and quick. Travellers will have to complete an online form with information regarding their identity, travel intention, and background security information.
They need to upload a scanned copy of their passport and a digital biometric photo. A fee of €7 is required, and the same should be paid online. Travellers are not required to go to an embassy, provide their fingerprints, or attend an interview, though such things may be required in extraordinary and very rare cases.
Every traveller who obtains an ETIAS will be able to use it for a period of three years or until their passport is no longer valid, whichever comes before. TECH

More Hack Attacks From The Cloud- New Ducktail Infostealer Malware Targeting Facebook Business and Ad Accounts: Facebook business and advertising accounts are at the receiving end of an ongoing campaign dubbed Ducktail designed to seize control as part of a financially driven cybercriminal operation.
“The threat actor targets individuals and employees that may have access to a Facebook Business account with an information-stealer malware,” Finnish cybersecurity company WithSecure (formerly F-Secure Business) said in a new report.
– The idea is to target employees with high-level access to Facebook Business accounts associated with their organizations, tricking them into downloading supposed Facebook advertising information hosted on cloud services Dropbox, Apple iCloud, and MediaFire. In some cases, the archive file containing the malicious payload is also delivered to victims through LinkedIn, ultimately allowing the attacker to take over any Facebook Business account.
– Facebook Business administrators are advised to review their access permissions and remove any unknown users to secure the accounts, delete any downloads associated with the unknown user, and then run a full system malware scan after the removal.
