Monkeypox Spain- Spain exceeds 5,000 monkeypox cases: {Translation, summary} 09Aug22
– Spain has already reported 5,162 confirmed cases of monkeypox, 585 more than last week, as of 9 August.
– The cases come from 17 autonomous communities: Madrid 1,817, Catalonia 1,636, Andalusia 632, Valencia 311, Basque Country 153, Canary Islands 126, Balearic Islands 134, Aragon 50, Galicia 78, Asturias 49, Castilla y León 48, Castilla-La Mancha 40, Murcia 31, Extremadura 21, Cantabria 19, Navarra 13, and La Rioja 4. The report does not include information on deaths or the characteristics of the cases that will be included in Friday’s update.
– So far, most of the cases detected in Spain and other non-endemic countries related to this outbreak are mild, with a low proportion of hospital admissions and low case fatality. The severity may be higher among young children, pregnant women and their newborns and immunocompromised people, “which may translate into a greater impact at the individual level”.

SPAIN

Spain police start wearing bodycams to boost security:
– The interior ministry said the bodycam was launched Monday and would be “rolled out on a gradual basis to all police officers”, without saying how many were involved in the initial stages. Spain’s TVE public television said the tiny cameras were being attached to the officers’ uniforms and could be activated either manually or automatically. The main Spanish police union JUPOL hailed the move on Twitter, saying it was in response to “a request that the union has been making”.
– “It will guarantee security, both for us to avoid any kind of misrepresentation of our interventions, as well as for the public, who will be able to clearly see the police’s professionalism and that there is no abuse of power nor excesses,” union spokesman Pablo Pérez told TVE.
– But the cameras have had mixed success. The absence of any legal obligation governing their use can also limit their scope to uncover police misconduct. Full article: https://www.thelocal.es/20220809/spain-police-start-wearing-bodycams-to-boost-security/

MARBELLA

Leader of Ukrainian gang involved in extorting money from compatriots arrested in Marbella:
– Spain’s National Police force has arrested four people who allegedly made up a criminal gang of Ukrainian origin dedicated to extorting money from their compatriots. The investigation revealed the structure of the criminal organisation and identified a man based in Marbella who directed, organised and coordinated the rest of the members who lived in Madrid. Three arrests were made in Madrid and one in Malaga and the four have been remanded in custody.
– Those arrested used excessive violence to commit robberies with violence, extortion and illegal detentions, as well as planning and executing drug dumps. In one case in Benidorm, the arrestees tied up and gagged three women, although one of them managed to escape and call for help. Officers have carried out five searches in homes in Madrid and Malaga, as reported by the National Police in a statement. As the investigation progressed, it became clear that one of the alleged perpetrators may have known one of the victims and, therefore, may have known that they had a large amount of cash that they had taken out of Ukraine to buy a house in Spain. UK

UK Plans for Blackouts in January in Emergency Energy Plan:
While the UK doesn’t envisage such shortfalls under its base case, the analysis lays bare the difficult winter potentially in store for Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak when they succeed Boris Johnson as prime minister next month. If they materialize, the power cuts would come even as Britons face up to average annual energy bills possibly rising above £4,200 ($5,086) in January from just under £2,000 currently, stoking already soaring inflation. If the winter is particularly cold, Britain may have to rely increasingly on pipeline shipments of gas from mainland Europe – where supplies are already thin as Moscow curbs flows. That presents a dilemma for the UK, which has very little domestic storage capacity. The pound hit its weakest in two weeks against the euro following the report. EUROPE

23 European Cities Ask EU to Limit Short-Term Rentals:
– After two years of stagnation due to COVID-19, European tourism is finally enjoying its recovery after almost every single country in the continent has opened its borders to international tourists. Yet, some of Europe’s most visited cities are facing another problem, that of a spike up in the number of short-term rentals that are leaving many locals unable to secure a home, and now are calling for legislative action to deal with short-term rentals.
– Some authorities have responded by creating specific fees for short term rentals, or are considering banning companies like Airbnb. For example, in Barcelona last year, after several years of complaints from residents about constant noise, high rental prices, and a lack of apartments, the municipality announced a ban on Airbnb and rentals under 31 days. French Towns Imposing Tourist Passes & Quotas in a Bid to Tackle Overtourism:
– The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people travel; thus, tourism gained new patterns, which in some cases aren’t welcomed. So is the case with France and the so-called “group tourism” that has been very frequent across the streets of the country, especially in Paris.
– This situation has caused Marseille, the oldest city in France, to introduce a tourist quota and reservation system to visit popular sites. Only 500 people will be given permission to visit the site, where usually 3,000 tourists arrive there each day. Region Sud, on the other hand, has created an application to control over-tourism during peak tourist season. In addition, Corsica has also introduced a limit on the number of tourists and also created the method of daily quotas in order to protect the environment in the region. For example, in order to visit Lavezzi Islands, Restonica Valley and Bavella Needles in Corsica, tourists are required to make a reservation beforehand. Furthermore, Parisians expressed their annoyance with group tourism, where herds of visitors are found in the streets of the capital, sometimes being noisy, while locals try to go on with their everyday lives. The double-decker tourist buses are also a concern for Paris, as they create traffic and make it tough to open bike lanes and widen sidewalks for some sports. USA

FBI ‘raided’ Trump’s Florida estate in confidential records probe:
The FBI searched Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate as part of an investigation into whether he took classified records from the White House to his Florida residence, people familiar with the matter said Monday, a move that represents a dramatic and unprecedented escalation of law enforcement scrutiny of the former president. Trump, disclosing the search in a lengthy statement, asserted that agents had opened up a safe at his home and described their work as an “unannounced raid” that he likened to “prosecutorial misconduct.” Full article: https://www.france24.com/en/americas/20220808-fbi-executes-search-warrant-at-trump-s-florida-home-mar-a-lag & VIDEO LINK
