Costa del Sol Set for Saharan Sand Storm that could Blanket the Coast: Meteorologist David Pinkitt has warned that a Saharan sand storm is brewing up in Northern Africa that threatens to blanket the entire Costa del Sol. Should it occur it would not be the first time the Coast has been ‘showered in sand’. Spain’s economy posts historic 18.5% quarterly fall due to coronavirus lockdown: New data shows that output has fallen to levels not seen since the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is the largest quarterly drop since the days of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). This means that during the first half of the year, a fourth of Spain’s gross domestic product (GDP) went up in smoke due to the strict restrictions introduced to curb the coronavirus epidemic. The lost production amounts to around €300 billion, a figure that would be enough to cover pension payments for Spain’s 10 million retirees for two years. Chrysalis-shaped space nebula turns into a butterfly: A chrysalis-shaped space nebula discovered in 1835 has become a butterfly that floats and flutters across the sky more than 3,000 light-years from Earth. In 1835, the English astronomer John Herschel discovered a planetary nebula located in the southern constellation Vela, which was called NGC 2899.
A planetary nebula is an emission nebula that has been ejected by a red giant star in the last moments of its life.
Originally it was appreciated that NGC 2899 had a curved, chrysalis-like shape, somewhat unusual for a planetary nebula, which is normally rotationally symmetric in one or more axes.
Now, the world’s most advanced astronomical observatory for visible light, ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), has obtained for the first time a precise image of that nebula and discovered that the chrysalis has become a butterfly. The image uncovers a cosmic butterfly, with a symmetrical structure, beautiful colors and intricate patterns, that seems to float and flutter across the sky. Google’s Rigged Search Results Kill Off Competition: The search engine dedicated almost half of the first page of results in our test to its own products, which dominated the coveted top of the page. n Google’s early years, users would type in a query and get back a page of 10 “blue links” that led to different websites. “We want to get you out of Google and to the right place as fast as possible,” co-founder Larry Page said in 2004.
Today, Google often considers that “right place” to be Google, an investigation by The Markup has found. We examined more than 15,000 recent popular queries and found that Google devoted 41 percent of the first page of search results on mobile devices to its own properties and what it calls “direct answers,” which are populated with information copied from other sources, sometimes without their knowledge or consent.
When we examined the top 15 percent of the page, the equivalent of the first screen on an iPhone X, that figure jumped to 63 percent. For one in five searches in our sample, links to external websites did not appear on the first screen at all!
Google’s decision to place its products above competitors’ and to present “answers” on the search page has led to lawsuits and regulatory fines. A number of websites said it killed their revenues—and their companies. Founders of both innovative startups and companies that had been around for a decade or more told The Markup that once Google started placing its product first, they didn’t stand a chance. Why You Should Stop Using Facebook Messenger: {Forbes.com}- The sad truth is that Messenger is seriously lacking on the security front. And this is a problem which is both getting worse and which Facebook cannot easily fix.
“Users choosing to communicate via Messenger must understand the real threat to their information within such apps,” warns ESET cybersecurity guru Jake Moore. “Although many may think the content in their messages isn’t personal, the real issue is that any information on you is open to abuse in the wrong hands.” Full article: https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2020/07/25/why-you-should-stop-using-facebook-messenger-encryption-whatsapp-update-twitter-hack/

Data isn’t just being collected from your phone. It’s being used to score you: {The Washington Post}- Operating in the shadows of the online marketplace, specialized tech companies you’ve likely never heard of are tapping vast troves of our personal data to generate secret “surveillance scores” – digital mug shots that supposedly predict our future behavior. The firms sell their scoring services to major businesses.
People with low scores can suffer harsh consequences.
CoreLogic and TransUnion say that scores they peddle to landlords can predict whether a potential tenant will pay the rent on time, be able to “absorb rent increases,” or break a lease. Large employers use HireVue, a firm that generates an “employability” score about candidates by analyzing “tens of thousands of factors,” including a person’s facial expressions and voice intonations. Other employers use Cornerstone’s score, which considers where a job prospect lives and which web browser they use to judge how successful they will be at a job.
Brand-name retailers purchase “risk scores” from Retail Equation to help make judgments about whether consumers commit fraud when they return goods for refunds. Players in the gig economy use outside firms such as Sift to score consumers’ “overall trustworthiness.” Wireless customers predicted to be less profitable are sometimes forced to endure longer customer service hold times.
Auto insurers raise premiums based on scores calculated using information from smartphone apps that track driving styles. Large analytics firms monitor whether we are likely to take our medication based on our propensity to refill our prescriptions; pharmaceutical companies, health-care providers and insurance companies can use those scores to, among other things, “match the right patient investment level to the right patients.”
Surveillance scoring is the product of two trends. First is the rampant (and mostly unregulated) collection of every intimate detail about our lives, amassed by the nanosecond from smartphones to cars, toasters to toys. This fire hose of data – most of which we surrender voluntarily – includes our demographics, income, facial characteristics, the sound of our voice, our precise location, shopping history, medical conditions, genetic information, what we search for on the Internet, the websites we visit, when we read an email, what apps we use and how long we use them, and how often we sleep, exercise and the like.
The second trend driving these scores is the arrival of technologies able to instantaneously crunch this data: exponentially more powerful computers and high-speed communications systems such as 5G, which lead to the scoring algorithms that use artificial intelligence to rate all of us in some way.
The result: automated decisions, based on each consumer’s unique score, that are, as a practical matter, irreversible. Full article: https://www.chron.com/opinion/article/Data-isn-t-just-being-collected-from-your-phone-15449776.php

Brexit Hotline

The Spanish government has a hotline to answer all queries from Brits living in Spain about the implications of Brexit, in English. Callers can ring 060 when in Spain or +34 902 887060 if calling from abroad and an automated system will offer the choice of either Spanish or English.
You will then be offered a choice of information on the different issues.
The service also offers the option of speaking to an operator for those requiring further information or with a specific query not dealt with by the automated options. Source: https://www.thelocal.es/20200218/spain-launches-dedicated-brexit-hotline
