Saturday August 15 is a National holiday, Assumption of Mary. Supermarkets in Torrox Costa have signs up saying they will remain open. I don’t know what the other shops plan on.
The Christian feast day of the Assumption of Mary celebrates the belief that God assumed the Virgin Mary into Heaven following her death.

CANCELLED- Velez-Malaga se mueve: 15 different activities will be carried out during the second half of August, designed for all audiences, taking part in different points of the historic centre of the town such as the Plaza del Carmen, the Plaza de Las Carmelitas and Cerro de San Cristóbal, among others. COMMUNICATION FROM THE VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA CITY COUNCILCANCELLATION OF ALL THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ‘VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA SE MOVE’ PERFORMANCE SERIES, AUGUST 2020. The City Council of Vélez-Málaga communicates that the entire program of the recently announced activities of ‘Vélez-Málaga Se Mueve’ – August 2020 is being canceled, the start of which was scheduled for the night of Friday, August 14 2020.
After learning about the new measures and recommendations announced this Friday by the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, about carrying out activities, meetings of people and nightlife; and after the figures that have been made public on the increase in coronavirus cases in the country in recent days, it is essential and a priority to guarantee citizen security and act with the utmost caution and responsibility in these difficult times.

Recommendations & Requests

Lockdown food: During lockdown and for some weeks after we relied on Cullens Supermarket in Nerja for our groceries. They provided an excellent weekly service delivering our order placed on line with them a day or so before. Being a local family firm we were able to phone them re our order and to add things even the same day. Reliable and nice to deal with. Prices good too.

Please be careful about believing crisis info posts on Fakebook, Social Media and even mainline news sources: There are tons of hoaxes circulating. First It Was Masks, Now We Need Nets? The West Nile Virus Arrives in Seville: It is transmitted via mosquito bites and has led to an outbreak of viral meningoencephalitis in Seville. A total of 19 people have caught the infection, which is a condition that simultaneously resembles meningitis and encephalitis. Of this number, 17 have been admitted into hospital and seven into intensive care. There are no vaccines or drugs to treat the hospitalized patients.
Last year, Seville was the site of the largest listeria outbreak in Spain’s history, with 222 cases, three deaths and seven miscarriages. In January, residents of Coria del Río discovered that the municipal sewage system was releasing toxic gasses that were harmful to human health. In mid-March, the area – like the rest of Spain – was placed under a strict lockdown in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19, and now the West Nile virus is threatening to destroy the local economy just as it was starting to recover from the confinement measures. Experts warn Spain is losing the 2nd round in virus fight: While an enhanced testing program is revealing that a majority of the newly infected are asymptomatic and younger, making them less likely to need medical treatment, concern is increasing as hospitals admit more patients again. Experts are working to determine why Spain is struggling more than other countries after western Europe had achieved a degree of control over the virus.
Spain, with a population of 47 million, leads Europe with 44,400 new confirmed cases in the past 14 days, compared with just 4,700 new cases reported by Italy, which has 60 million inhabitants and was the first European country to be rocked by the coronavirus. Spanish health minister announces closure of nightclubs, bars in bid to slow coronavirus spread: Salvador Illa detailed a raft of measures that were agreed at a meeting with regional health officials, including a ban on smoking in public when safe distancing cannot be observed/
Illa also said that bars and restaurants would need to guarantee a minimum safe distance of 1.5 meters between patrons at the bar and when they are eating at a table. The maximum number of diners will be limited to 10.
Illa also announced that new residents entering senior care homes would be subject to PCR tests to detect coronavirus infections, as would staff from such residences returning from their vacations. Visits to homes will also be limited to one person per resident with a maximum of one hour.
Another measure announced by Illa on Friday was a blanket ban across Spain on smoking in public if a two-meter distance cannot be observed.

By sea, rail or by air, Brits scramble to get out of France: The exodus was prompted by the British government’s decision late Thursday to take France off a list of nations exempt from traveler quarantine requirements because of a sharp rise there in new virus infections. For those who cannot work from home on their return, the mandatory self-quarantine could see them penalized financially. Full story: https://apnews.com/de267aeecfbb6d09678801eda7bcfd93

Germany declares Spain a risk zone for the coronavirus, including the Balearic Islands: The German federal government has declared Spain a risk zone due to the increase in cases of coronarvius, according to German media. Given the increase in infections, on this occasion, Germany has included the Balearic Islands in this travel notice. The Government warns that journeys should not be made if there is no need, while requiring a coronavirus test for travelers who arrive in Germany from any of these points. For the moment, the Canary Islands have been left out of the declaration, according to the same media. Thailand Shuts its Borders to Tourism Until 2021: Thailand has kept its borders completely closed to outside foreigners. The Telegraph reports that the ninth most visited country in the world (with 38.2 million tourists in 2019) has ruled out reopening internationally until at least 2021.
Chattan was also not optimistic about 2021: “Although we will reopen the borders in January, I do not expect us to exceed seven million tourists over the whole year.” It should be noted that tourism generates a substantial amount of revenue for the Asian country, 12 per cent of GDP (more than 60 billion dollars annually). So far, this nation that boasts of around 70 million inhabitants, Thailand has registered 3,300 cases and 58 deaths from Covid-19 in total. Brexit Hotline

The Spanish government has a hotline to answer all queries from Brits living in Spain about the implications of Brexit, in English. Callers can ring 060 when in Spain or +34 902 887060 if calling from abroad and an automated system will offer the choice of either Spanish or English.
You will then be offered a choice of information on the different issues.
The service also offers the option of speaking to an operator for those requiring further information or with a specific query not dealt with by the automated options. Source: https://www.thelocal.es/20200218/spain-launches-dedicated-brexit-hotline
