Halting Erosion using Vetiver
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment depending on the current travel restrictions. Please email or call first. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa.
Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture.
Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites.
In the 2 photos below you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.
We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge.
Here is a link to a short video showing the results.
https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo
We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.

COVID-19

The Andalusian Covid incidence rate remains 80 points above the national average: {Translation} Updated: 15/06/2021, 14:52
-Andalusia has 1,267 new cases of coronavirus infection on Tuesday, down from the 1,315 cases recorded the previous day, although 106 cases more than those recorded on Tuesday of last week. The community has 18 deaths caused by Covid-19.
-These records halt the downward trend in incidence that seemed to mark the beginning of the week to remain stagnant in the plateau phase of this fourth wave of the pandemic. Thus, the incidence rates remain at the same values as the previous day, just a few tenths down to stand at 184.2 points in terms of cumulative incidence at 14 days. This is still 80 points above the national average and in the high alert range.
-Incidence falls especially in the provinces with the highest incidence. Huelva is down 18 points (272) and Jaén 12 (215). It is up today in Almeria, which marks the minimum with 69 cases; Seville and, especially in Cordoba with 17 points more than the day before, which places this province as the second with the second highest impact of the virus at this time with a rate at 14 days of 225 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants.
-The increase in the number of Covid patients in Andalusian hospitals is limited this Tuesday to 8 more admissions, to total 711 bedridden, the lowest increase on Tuesday since the fall of the third wave in March. There is a clear downward trend in the pressure of care by Covid. However, the admission of 15 more patients to the ICU breaks the downward trend in critical care pressure observed on the previous day. In total, 156 Andalusians are currently being treated in intensive care units for coronavirus. High infection rate prevents Andalusia from reducing measures and postpones de-escalation to July: {Translation} Updated: 15/06/2021, 20:50
-The committee of experts advising the Andalusian government on the evolution of the pandemic recommended on Tuesday to stop the de-escalation in terms of restrictions on opening hours and capacity for another two weeks in view of the stagnation of the epidemiological situation in the community, which already has the highest Covid incidence rates in Spain.
-After the meeting, the Junta de Andalucía announced that it will extend the measures, adding only two changes with respect to its last resolution of 1 June, in which it also extended the restrictions approved after the end of the state of alarm in May. Thus, it is allowed to extend opening hours for establishments selling and serving ice cream until 1.00 am. These establishments will not be allowed to serve or sell alcoholic beverages after midnight.
-A specific risk assessment will also be introduced in those municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants with an incidence of more than 1,000 cases / per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. It is necessary to make such an assessment in those cases of municipalities with a clear downward trend at the time of their assessment by the Territorial Committee.
-The committee has met on this occasion without the presence of the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, who at the same time was holding a round of consultations with the parliamentary spokespersons in San Telmo in preparation for his interview with Pedro Sánchez in the Moncloa on Thursday.
-Once the meeting was over, the Minister for Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, who chaired the forum, insisted on sending a message of caution to the Andalusian population “because the virus is still with us”. “In Andalusia we are carrying out a very high rate of vaccination, which is increasing, but despite this we cannot lower our guard,” he stressed.
-Andalusia is already the region with the highest cumulative incidence rates in Spain. The 14-day rate stands at 184.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 80 points above the national figure. Covid-19 vaccination drive in Spain- 45% of population has had at least one dose: A total of 31.6% of people in the 40-49 age group in Spain have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. Of Spain’s 17 regions – which are in charge of the vaccination drive – only Madrid, the Basque Country and Castilla y León have immunized fewer than 20% of this demographic. Since the inoculation campaign began last December, Spain has administered more than 33 million doses, and 45.3% of the entire population – 21.4 million people – have received at least one shot. SPAIN

Electricity bills soar 45% in the first fortnight of June, with almost 28 euros more: {Translation} Updated: 15June, 2021, 11:58
-According to Facua, the year-on-year increase over the last fortnight represents an increase of 45.4% for the average user compared to June 2020, when the monthly bill stood at 60.58 euros. The average user’s bill last May was 82.13 euros.
-The average user used by Facua in its analysis has a contracted power of 4.4 kilowatts (kW) and a consumption of 366 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month.
-As for the percentages of consumption in the three time slots of the new billing system, the association has taken as a reference the current profile of the average user without time zone discrimination published by the National Securities Market Commission (CNMC), who consumes 45% of electricity during off-peak hours, 29% during peak hours and 26% during flat hours.
-The average price per kilowatt hour (kWh) from 1 to 15 June was 13.62 cents in off-peak hours (including taxes), 18.19 cents in peak hours and 30.35 cents in peak hours.
-In June 2020, the average price without hourly discrimination was 11.31 cents, and a year earlier, in June 2019, it was 13.78 cents. As for the average last May, it was 17.20 cents.
-According to Facua’s data, if the average user’s consumption in each time slot is weighted, the average price per kWh for the first fifteen days of June amounts to 19.65 cents, 73.7% higher than the 11.31 cents in June 2020. The price is close to the historical peak of the second week of January 2021 (from the 8th to the 14th), when it reached 20.64 cents.
-Regardless of the daily peaks that have been reached at certain times, the highest monthly price in history was during the entire first quarter of 2012, when the kWh stood at 20.85 cents.
*Solutions to the “brutal increases”*
-In a statement, the association calls on the government to find solutions to “the brutal tariff increases” that continue to be applied by electricity companies and a change in the new system of billing by hourly time slots in force since 1 June, “which in itself represents an increase in the price of energy consumed for a very high percentage of consumers and is particularly detrimental to the most disadvantaged economies”.
-It also considers that the average drop of 14.2% in the price of the fixed term of the bill is “absolutely insufficient, especially considering that during the governments of Mariano Rajoy it increased by 103%” and regrets that the fourth vice president and minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, “has not publicly stated that the CNMC should modify the schedules, with the advancement of the ‘valley’ period to 22.00 hours from Monday to Friday” that Facua demands.
-This body has already pointed out that it is too early to do so after two ministers from Unidas Podemos asked for it, although the government has the power to act on the regulated part of the bill that it controls, the charges.
-However, Facua values “positively” the proposed cut of 1,000 million euros per year in overpayments to electricity companies for the non-emission of CO2 in hydro and nuclear power plants.
-In addition, the association demands “a far-reaching reform” of the social bonus so that many more families can benefit from it and a reduction in the Value Added Tax (VAT) on the bills of domestic consumers, who pay more than 27% in indirect taxes as they are charged the general VAT of 21%, plus the special tax on electricity. ANDALUCIA

Andalusia will only relax the use of face masks outdoors in the countryside and on the beach: {Translation, first paragraph}
Updated: 15/06/2021, 18:04
-The Andalusian government will not relax the use of face masks except for very specific circumstances in the open air. The Minister of Health, Jesús Aguirre, has explained that his criteria is that it will only cease to be obligatory on the beach, “when we are in our family circle” and on walks in the countryside, also maintaining distances. MALAGA

Uber is expanding its services to the whole of the Costa del Sol of Malaga: {Translation, summary}
-Uber, the car hire with driver company, also known as VTC, is expanding its presence in the province of Malaga. As the company announced on Tuesday, its vehicles now cover a full 200 kilometres along the Costa del Sol, in the province of Malaga and Cadiz. In this way, any user can now request journeys from Nerja to La Línea de la Concepción, as part of the company’s expansion plan and its commitment to the region.
-The number of VTCs in Malaga has not yet reached its peak and there are already 2,070 licences in existence.
-In the new coverage area, which will reach important tourist locations such as the caves of Nerja, Burriana beach, the old town of Marbella, Bioparc Fuengirola or the golf courses of Sotogrande, the portfolio of services that Uber already offers for the rest of Malaga will be available: UberX, the platform’s most popular service; Uber Van, for group transfers; and Uber Comfort and Uber Black, which offer premium services with high-end vehicles.
-To book rides through Uber, users simply download the app, create an account and add their payment method. To start their journey, they enter their destination and indicate the pick-up point. The app displays the total amount of the trip and the user can make the payment via the app, immediately receiving a receipt for the trip in their email and an invoice that can be downloaded from the website.
After displaying the price, the app sets the minutes remaining for the vehicle to arrive at the pick-up point, as well as all the driver’s information, the photo and the vehicle’s model and registration number. To communicate with the driver, the user can use the in-app chat or make a phone call completely anonymously. During the trip, the passenger can share his or her location and estimated time of arrival with family or friends. At the end of the trip, both users and drivers can rate each other, which is very useful information to ensure the quality of the service.
