Fourth Covid jab will NOT be offered to the whole population, clarifies Spain’s Ministry of Health: In a statement correcting a comment made by Health minister Carolina Darias in a TV interview on Thursday (and reported in yesterday’s DigameXtra), the Ministry now says the booster jab is only intended for the over-80s and people who are vulnerable.
Amós García Rojas, president of the Spanish Vaccinology Association, said he thought there must have been some confusion when the Minister made her comment. “I’m sure she was referring to the fact that there will be vaccines available for everyone who needs one, not that everyone is going to have one,” he said. “I think there was some confusion or what she said was misinterpreted”. The price of electricity finally falls for the beneficiaries of the gas cap and is reduced by 20.4% this Saturday:
– The price of electricity for customers covered by the regulated rate of the regulated price for small consumers (PVPC) will finally be cheaper this Saturday, a day of less demand and in the final stretch of the heat wave. This is the first fall after the entry into force last Tuesday of the Iberian solution, of which this group of users are the main beneficiaries.
– With the gas price on the rise again, PVPC customers are going to pay this Saturday (a day with less electricity consumption due to lower industrial activity) 212.02 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) for energy, which represents a decrease of 20.4% compared to Friday, according to data from the Iberian Electricity Market Operator (OMIE). Spanish fuel station association warns motorists could pay more than three euros a litre at pumps this summer: Fuel prices are continuing to rise in Spain. Both 95-octane and diesel are now over two euros a litre in many places.
If the price does reach three euros a litre, filling a 55-litre tank will cost 165 euros,“ and that means that for a vehicle which uses 7 litres per 100 kilometres, travelling 20,000 kilometres a year is going to cost about 4,200 euros, or 350 euros a month,” Rabadán, president of the Spanish Confederation of Service Station Businesses (CEEES), said.
Meanwhile, the OCU consumers organisation says the discount of 20 céntimos per litre of fuel is not having the desired effect of keeping prices down, and that more drastic measures are needed, such as a temporary cancellation of taxes. Full article:

Andalucía votes in the regional election on Sunday: {DigameXtra} Opinion polls show the Partido Popular (PP), well ahead but short of a majority. This was also the case in the last election, PP was forced to form a coalition. Forming a new coalition, this time with hard-right VOX, is expected to be key to power, as PP’s former partner, Ciudadanos, has lost popularity and is no longer a significant force.
– This could bring on some changes in policy, as PP has been cooperative with the PSOE socialist party and their progressive social programs in recent times. With conservative VOX as the new partner, the huge progressive policies push of the past few years will encounter more resistance.
– While non-Spanish citizens cannot vote on Sunday, the impact on expats of who runs the Andalucían government is certainly felt, especially in the healthcare and schools it provides, as well as social care and environmental services.

The Iberian lynx reaches its historical population record in Andalusia with 522 specimens: {Translation}
– The population of the Iberian lynx in Andalusia has reached a new historical record in 2021 with 522 specimens, a figure that consolidates the community as a reference in the conservation of this species, by concentrating 38.2 % of the total of the Iberian Peninsula (1,635).
– This is reflected in the census published today by staff of the Junta de Andalucía attached to the Iberian Lynx Recovery Plan and members of the CBD-Habitat Foundation, which indicates that the population of this feline has grown by 16 specimens, which is 3.1 % more than in 2020, the regional administration reported in a statement.
– Currently, the 522 registered specimens are distributed over an area of more than 1,600 square kilometres distributed in different areas and population centres.
– Among the data collected in the 2021 census, the increase in the number of cubs stands out, from 157 to 174 individuals, which represents an increase of 10.8%, and the number of breeding females remains the same as last year, 124.
– Andalusia continues to be the region with the highest number of breeding females in the whole Iberian Peninsula, with almost 44.8 % of a total of 277.
– By population, the Andújar-Cardeña-Marmolejo-Montoro area continues to be home to the largest number of lynx, with 200 lynxes counted last year. The Guarrizas Valley, in the province of Jaén, is the area with the second largest population, with 151 individuals, and the Guadalmellato area in Cordoba, which also started in the Life programme for the conservation of the Iberian lynx in 2006-2011, has 44 specimens.
– The subpopulations of Andújar-Cardeña, Guarrizas, Guadalmellato and Campo de Montiel – the latter area within Castilla la Mancha – are considered to function as a metapopulation – Sierra Morena Oriental – given that it has been found that there is fluid genetic exchange between them.
– As for the Doñana-Aljarafe area, it is worth noting the increase in the number of specimens counted, reaching 94 individuals.
– In areas such as Las Minas, Setefilla, Pegalajar and Valdecigüeñas-Río Sotillo, the latter of which shares territory with Extremadura, the lynx has established itself naturally. The census data show an increase in the number of specimens in all of them.
– Finally, the census shows that a total of four specimens were released into the natural Andalusian environment last year – three in the Guarrizas area (Jaén) and one in Las Minas, in the Sierra Norte de Sevilla – and 30 individuals from the captive breeding programme were released on the mainland. Adif will renew the communications infrastructure in Andalusia: {Translation}
– Adif will renew its communications infrastructure in Andalusia with the aim of offering greater reliability and quality parameters for future network operation and meeting the demand for current and future services. To this end, a contract worth 24,724,963.90 Euro has been put out to tender, which includes actions in the provinces of Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaén, Málaga and Seville.
– The aim of this action is to enable the deployment of the multiservice IP network (an Internet protocol used for data communication) adapted to current needs and to make the fibre optic network that Adif has deployed on conventional gauge lines more robust, as part of a telecommunications improvement plan.
– The different works included in this contract, which has a completion period of 23 months, are as follows:
Adaptation of the fibre to carry all services currently on copper cable.
Replacement of deteriorated fibre cables.
Deployment of fibre where there is none and where it is required by different services. Source: Spanish: https://www.granadadigital.es/adif-renovara-infraestructura-comunicaciones-andalucia-granada-tren/

EU backs Ukraine’s membership bid to ‘live the European dream’: The European Union gave its blessing on Friday for Ukraine and its neighbour Moldova to become candidates to join, reaching out deep into the former Soviet Union for what would be the most dramatic geopolitical shift to result from Russia’s invasion. Russia announces new gas cuts to Europe as leaders visit Ukraine: While the leaders of Germany, France and Italy toured the devastated areas of Ukraine on Thursday and showed their support for Kyiv, Russia’s state-owned energy giant Gazprom sent a new message to the European Union in response to the sanctions that are crippling Russian industry. The French gas company Engie reported on Thursday that the gas supply it receives from Russia has decreased, a day after Berlin and Rome suffered a similar contraction in the undersea pipeline.
– These three countries are not the only ones affected. The Slovakian gas company SPP revealed on Thursday that Gazprom has cut around 30% of the gas supply it had contracted, while OMV of Austria, a country that defends softer sanctions on Russia, also reported reductions. EU Citizens Now Need a Visa to Enter Japan: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that EU/EEA citizens, as well as citizens of several other countries who do not hold a re-entry permit, need to apply for a visa in order to be able to newly enter Japan, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
– “Currently, all foreign nationals who are recognised to be in special exceptional circumstances, and wish to newly enter Japan, need to apply for a visa except for those with re-entry permit,” the Ministry said, announcing the new rules.
– Previously, Japan had Visa Exemption Agreements with 68 countries and regions, including the EU/EEA countries.
– Additionally, those who wish to stay in Japan for more than 90 days are required to apply for an extension of the period of stay.
– Even though Japan reopened its borders, the country’s tourism agency noted that certain rules continue to apply to incoming travellers. The government said that travellers must wear a face mask at all times. In addition, it was noted that everyone needs to take out private medical insurance that covers expenses related to the Coronavirus infection.

Cricket News- England break ODI record with total of 498-4 in Netherlands: England broke their own record for the highest score in a one-day international with a mammoth 498-4 against the Netherlands in Amstelveen.
– In Matthew Mott’s first game as England’s new white-ball coach, Jos Buttler finished unbeaten on 162 from 70 balls as he struck an incredible 14 sixes and seven fours.
– Dawid Malan (125) and Phil Salt (122), with his maiden ODI ton, also both made centuries off 90 and 82 balls respectively as the Netherlands bowlers were smashed to all parts of the ground.
England’s total eclipses the 481-6 they made against Australia at Trent Bridge in 2018, and breaks the List A record of 496-4, scored by Surrey in 2007. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/61839784

Pickled Quail Eggs: We see these small quail eggs in most supermarkets, but what to do with them? I have had them raw, atop certain varieties of sushi. But I never make sushi at home. And I have seen pics of Scotch quail eggs, but have never actually eaten one.
But here is something I would make, and enjoy. Pickled quail eggs are tiny delicious treats that are easy to make at home. Pickled eggs CANNOT be safely canned at home. These must be stored in the refrigerator. That said, pickled quail eggs should keep in the refrigerator for several months, if they last that long…

Big Changes Coming To Fakebook- Changing Its Algorithm To Take On Tiktok- To feed you stories the Algorithm wants you to see (otherwise known as Spam), rather than sourcing stories from pages you follow and have shown genuine interest in:
– Facebook employees were recently given a new directive with sweeping implications: make the app’s home page feed more like TikTok.
– Simply bringing Reels, the company’s short-form video feature, from Instagram into Facebook wasn’t going to cut it. Executives were closely tracking TikTok’s moves and had grown worried that they weren’t doing enough to compete. In conversations with CEO Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year, they decided that Facebook needed to rethink the feed entirely.
– In an internal memo from late April obtained by The Verge, the Meta executive in charge of Facebook, Tom Alison, spelled out the plan: rather than prioritize posts from accounts people follow, Facebook’s main feed will, like TikTok, start heavily recommending posts regardless of where they come from. And years after Messenger and Facebook split up as separate apps, the two will be brought back together, mimicking TikTok’s messaging functionality.
– Here’s how the future Facebook app will work in practice: the main tab will become a mix of Stories and Reels at the top, followed by posts its “discovery engine” recommends from across both Facebook and Instagram. It’ll be a more visual, video-heavy experience with clearer prompts to direct message friends a post. To make messaging even more prominent, Facebook is working on placing a user’s Messenger inbox at the top right of the app, undoing the infamous decision to separate the two apps eight years ago. Sign up for our newsletter by emailing Father Louis at malagachaplain@gmail.com to receive login details, and news of other future events. We look forward to welcoming you and being of service.

Nerja and Almuñécar Anglican Church:
We are part of the Church of England in Spain.
Everyone is welcome to our Sunday services in English which begin at 12:00 noon in San Miguel, Plaza Andalucia, Nerja. Please note, this not the large white church near the Balcon de Europa, El Salvador. It is situated some 10 minutes walk away, just off the main road that runs through the town.
We aspire to be a welcoming and inclusive community, open to all people seeking faith and friendship.
Please contact Father Nigel to enquire about baptisms, marriage blessings and funerals.
If you can’t get to church on Sunday, we gather on Zoom for a communion service at 09:30 CET on Wednesday mornings and a Compline service at 18:00 CET on Thursdays.
To receive details of how you can join our online services or to contact Father Nigel, please refer to our website. You can also find us on Facebook.
