Fourth Covid jab “for the entire population” announced by Spain’s Minister of Health: 16 June 2022, 13:21
– The vaccination campaign will begin in the autumn, when improvements in the current vaccines are expected to deal with the new variants. The minister’s announcement comes at a time when the number of Covid cases in Spain remains at low levels. The cumulative incidence rate in those over 60 years of age, the only one measured in the ‘flu’ phase, stands at 590 – nothing like the 3,400 last Christmas.
– Since April, the Ministry of Health has been studying offering the fourth dose of a Covid-19 vaccine to the more than three million people in Spain over 80 years of age or those who live in nursing homes. At that time, everything indicated that it was going to start being administered in May, however that was delayed. But now it is known that it will be from autumn “and for the entire population”. By then the first Spanish vaccine, from the Hipra laboratory, could have already been approved.
– At present, some 350,000 immunosuppressed people (people who have received transplants, are being treated for cancer or are over 40 with Down Syndrome) have already received their fourth vaccine jab. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/fourth-covid-jab-spain-20220616131833-nt.html

From the “Don’t these high paid scientists have anything better to do?” file –
Monkeypox Is Getting A New Name: Though the virus is now evident in other parts of the world, monkeypox has become synonymous with African countries, which is why a new name is being considered for the condition.
The World Health Organization has said it is looking to rename the virus due to the connotations and assumptions that it is an “African disease.”
It comes after a group of scientists signed a paper stating an “urgent need for a non-discriminatory and non-stigmatizing” moniker used to identify the virus. The team of 29 experts are now calling it hMPXV and advocate for a “speedy decision and adoption of a new name.” Full article: https://sports.yahoo.com/monkeypox-getting-name-heres-why-114346030.html

Gas soars and nullifies the announced reduction in electricity prices: {Translation, summary}
– The price of electricity continues to rise despite the mechanism implemented by the government to limit the cost of gas used to generate electricity. Tomorrow it reaches 266.38 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), 3% more than today (259.01).
– Friday’s average price is the result of adding the 177.90 euros per MWh of the auction in the wholesale market and the 88.48 euros of compensation (adjustment) for the difference in the price of gas (105.50 euros per MWh today) and the limit of 40 euros per MWh established by the Executive.
– A year ago, the average electricity price was 93 euros per MWh.
– The main reason given for the increase in electricity prices is the sharp rise in the price of natural gas. Source, Spanish: https://www.abc.es/economia/abci-dispara-y-deja-sin-efecto-anunciada-rebaja-precios-electricidad-202206161415_noticia.html

Could Food Shortages Return? – Hauliers threaten to call more strikes in July as fuel prices in Spain soar to a new high:
– The president of the Platform in Defence of Transport, who led the strikes in March, has given the government till the end of this month to fulfil the promises it made at the time.
– Fuel prices in Spain are at a record high and hauliers are suffering the consequences. On Wednesday 15 June, petrol was on sale at 2.14 euros a litre and diesel 2.05 euros, so the discount given by the government is not having the hoped-for effect in keeping costs down, especially for this sector which took protest action back in March and paralysed the distribution of food products in some parts of the country.

Infoca fights new forest fire in the Serranía de Ronda: Two helicopters and four crews of specialist firefighters rushed to the scene of the blaze in the Arroyo El Cucharro area in the Genal valley municipality of Algatocín
– A new forest fire has been been declared in Algatocín in the Serranía de Ronda this Thursday afternoon (16 June) just one day after the blaze in the Sierra Bermeja, that started a week ago in the nearby village of Pujerra, was reported to be controlled, but not extinguished.
– The Junta de Andaluía’s Plan Infoca brigade initially reported, at 4.20pm, that two helicopters were despatched to the scene of the blaze in the Arroyo El Cucharro area in the Genal valley municipality of Algatocín. Four teams of firefighters on the ground were also tackling the flames.
– People in the area reported that the fire was visible from the A-373, at kilometre 68. It caught the attention of several drivers who were traveling on the road between Algatocín and Salitre.
At 6.20pm Plan Infoca tweeted that the evolution of the fire was ‘favourable’ and air support was being withdrawn. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/ronda/forest-fire-algatocin-serrania-ronda-20220616171542-nt.html
