Recommendations & Requests

Car baby seat: I wonder if anyone in Digameland can help me please. My four-year-old great grandson is coming over for a week at the end of August and I wondered what is the law on travelling in cars. Do they have to sit in a baby seat or is a booster seat sufficient? Also, where do I buy or rent one?
Thanking you in anticipation, Alan, Puente Don Manuel

MALAGA

A hundred troops are still working on the fire of the Sierra de Mijas, already stabilized:
{Translation, summary} 18 July, 2022 10:03
At 19:30 on Sunday, Infoca experts considered the fire in the Sierra de Mijas to be stabilised after a reconnaissance flight over the area and the emergency level was reduced to zero. However, this does not mean that the fire is out. In fact, the fire is still not under control, which is why around one hundred Plan Infoca personnel will continue to work on Monday, as well as six heavy extinguishing vehicles, the Mobile Meteorology and Transmissions Unit from Malaga and a medical unit (UMIF). EUROPE

Temperatures have soared into the mid-40s in some regions, with wildfires raging across tinder-dry countryside in Portugal, Spain and France: As the UK braces for record temperatures – with the possibility of it passing 40C on Tuesday – mainland Europe is also experiencing a severe heatwave. Temperatures have soared into the mid-40s in some regions, with wildfires raging across tinder-dry countryside in Portugal, Spain and France. The heatwave is expected to spread to Germany and Belgium in the coming days.
– Spain was facing the eighth and final day of a more than week-long heatwave on Monday, which caused more than 510 heat-related deaths, according to estimates from the Carlos III Health Institute. With fires burning thousands of hectares in Galicia, Castille and Leon, Catalonia, Extremadura and Andalusia, Spain mourned the death of one firefighter in the north-western province of Zamora on Sunday evening. Almost the entire country faces a extreme fire risk.Full article: https://inews.co.uk/news/world/france-fires-map-where-french-wildfires-blazes-spain-portugal-1747699

Russia’s Gazprom declares force majeure on some gas supplies to Europe: A letter dated July 14 was seen by Reuters on Monday; the legal force of the letter is to shield Gazprom from compensation payments for disrupted supplies, but risks escalating tensions between Russia and the West. The letter said Gazprom, which has a monopoly on Russian gas exports by pipeline, could not fulfil its supply obligations because of “extraordinary” circumstances. It said the force majeure clause, invoked to lift a business from contractual obligations because of factors beyond its control, was retroactively effective from deliveries starting from June 14.
– The Nord Stream 1 pipeline is shut for annual maintenance, which is meant to be completed on July 21, but some of Gazprom’s European customers are nervous supplies will not resume. Golf News- Cameron Smith rallies to win British Open at St. Andrews, afterwards rumours suggest he may jump ship: Cameron Smith charged his way into history on the Old Course, a Sunday stunner at St. Andrews that sent the Australian to his first major by overcoming Rory McIlroy to win the British Open. The stage was set for McIlroy to end his eight-year drought in the majors and cap off a week of celebration at the home of golf in the 150th Open.
– Instead, Smith stole the show by running off five straight birdies to start the back nine and delivering more clutch moments at the end. His 8-under 64 was the lowest final round by a champion in the 30 times golf’s oldest championship has been played at St. Andrews.
– Veteran New York Times sports reporter Christopher Clarey tweeted: “The brand new British Open champion Cam Smith was just asked if there was any truth to the rumours that he may jump to the breakaway LIV tour. He rejected the question but that was hardly a denial.”

SPACE

Unusually High Solar Activity- Leading space science expert predicts a ‘direct hit’ today on Earth from a solar storm:
– It has been a busy time for solar activity. Back in March of 2022, Earth was hit by separate geomagnetic storms, according to government weather agencies in the U.S. and the U.K. Though the geomagnetic storms likely didn’t cause any harm, they brought into focus the potential harm that could come from more powerful storms in the future.
– Then earlier this month, a G1-class geomagnetic storm hit the Earth, causing bright auroras over Canada. The only problem is that nobody saw this storm coming until it was quite late.
– Five days ago, a giant sunspot and filaments on the solar surface had astronomers worried about possible Earth-directed solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that could lead to blackouts.
– Finally, on Friday, it was reported that a massive solar flare had erupted from the Sun, which could see radio blackouts in many parts of the world.
– Now, on Saturday, Dr. Tamitha Skov, known as the “Space Weather Woman,” predicted a “direct hit” from a solar storm to take place on Tuesday.
– “Direct Hit!” she wrote on Twitter. “A snake-like filament launched as a big solar storm while in the Earth-strike zone.”
“NASA predicts impact early July 19. Strong “Aurora shows” possible with this one, deep into mid-latitudes,” she explained, adding that there could be disruption to GPS and amateur radio.
