COVID & MONKEYPOX
Spain reaches 3,000 monkeypox cases:
{Translation} 21 July 2022, 13:41
– Spain remains the country with the highest number of monkeypox cases in the world. The Ministry of Health has notified the European health administrations of 2,835 infections, ahead of 2,115 in the United Kingdom and 2,033 in Germany, according to the latest weekly report of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published on Thursday. Moreover, the number of cases reported in Spain will continue to grow, as the statistics already managed by Carolina Darias’ department, with the new updates as of 19 July, bring the figure to 3,125.
– According to ECDC data, there are already 10,604 cases in the European Union, the continent most affected by the disease. Worldwide, the World Health Organisation has detected 14,000 cases, with Europe accounting for three out of four cases.
– According to the ECDC, most patients are male (99.5%) and aged between 31 and 40 years (42%). Among the most common symptoms of the disease were rash (94.5%) and fever, fatigue, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, chills, sore throat or headache (65%). Eight per cent of the patients were hospitalised and one of them required intensive care. So far, no deaths have been reported. In addition, 31 infections have occurred in health care workers.
– In its new report, the Ministry of Health warns that, although most of the infections have occurred “in the context of high-risk sexual relations” between men, there is a possibility that transmission “could shift to other population groups”, which could lead to “serious cases in vulnerable populations”. In this regard, the Community of Madrid confirmed on Wednesday a case of monkeypox in a seven-month-old baby whose parents were infected. All three members of the family have been vaccinated and are in good health, although the baby is being kept in isolation at home. The Madrid Ministry of Health stressed that this is a one-off case due to the coincidence of the infection in the baby’s parents and that the transmission occurred during their care.

Price of gas falls sharply after the reopening of the Russian Nord Stream: The Russian gas company Gazprom has restored this Thursday the gas supply through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline after being stopped for ten days for maintenance work, as reported by an infrastructure spokesman to the German agency DPA. The energy market breathes a sigh of relief, at least temporarily, and prices relax by more than 5% after Moscow’s decision. Get those old people out of their big empty houses – OECD calls for housing taxes to keep pace with prices, higher taxes on 2nd homes & non-occupied properties: {Translation}
– The price of housing has been rising steadily in recent years, but taxes on this asset have remained more or less stable, resulting in an “unfair and inefficient” system, according to a report by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). “Revenues from housing taxes have not kept pace with price increases,” the document published on Thursday reveals.
– The organisation, which brings together 38 countries, including Spain, believes that housing taxation should be revalued in line with market prices so that it does not fall behind, causing prices to escalate and making it more difficult for young people and the poorer classes to afford housing.
– The report ‘Housing taxes in OECD countries’ reveals that when the tax bases of these property taxes are not updated to prices, “distortions” are generated with taxpayers who are suffering the price rises because they are starting to access the market.
– As a result, older households have no incentive to move into smaller, less valuable homes and free up space in larger homes for younger families, the organisation explains. Low tax burdens arising from obsolete values “reduce incentives to use the housing stock efficiently”, as owners of undervalued homes are pushed to remain in them.
– This is not just a Spanish problem. The OECD points out that there are some countries that do reassess their housing taxes on a regular basis, such as Norway, New Zealand and Lithuania. However, the majority of European partners do not do so: Austria has not reviewed this taxation since 1973, Belgium since 1975, France since 1970 and Germany since 1964. One of the European powers – although already outside the EU – that most recently reviewed this system was the United Kingdom, in 1991.
– In the case of Spain – whose property tax is the IBI, Impuesto de Bienes Inmuebles – it is in the OECD average in terms of property taxation, the report confirms.
– The OECD sets out a series of recommendations to improve the fairness of the tax, but also the extra revenue that countries would obtain thanks to the revaluation of these taxes. “Collecting taxes on outdated values reduces horizontal equity because households of similar value may not have similar tax liabilities, and also vertical equity because more valuable households may not pay more tax” as the years go by, the organisation says.
– In addition, they recommend higher taxes on second homes and non-owner-occupied dwellings. Source, Spanish: https://www.canarias7.es/economia/fiscalidad/ocde-impuestos-vivienda-20220721114846-ntrc.html

FINANCIAL
European Central Bank Raises Interest Rates For The First Time In 11 Years As Global Inflation Surges:
– In a statement on Thursday, the ECB said it would raise rates by 50 basis points as a “key step to make sure inflation returns to its 2% target over the medium term”, coming in at the higher end of expectations calling for an increase of at least 25 basis points.
– Officials also signaled additional hikes to come, saying “further normalization” of interest rates will be appropriate, though they suggested the larger hike on Thursday will allow them to move more slowly with future increases, adding: “The frontloading today…allows the Governing Council to make a transition to a meeting-by-meeting approach to interest rate decisions.” The decision comes after data showing inflation in the United Kingdom skyrocketed 9.4% in June, hitting a new 40-year high and surpassing similarly high inflation of 9.1% in the United States.
