Halting Erosion Using Vetiver Grass from Vetiver Spain:
Vetiver Grass is a fast growing non-invasive clumping grass that grows to 2 metres in height. It has a root system that grows to 3-4 metres deep and they are very strong.
The National Geographic Magazine has called them “Roots of Steel”.
Once Vetiver is established it is drought resistant.
We are located in Sayalonga and we can plant all year round but February and March are the best months to plant Vetiver. Vetiver loves the heat of a long summer to get established.
Decomposing Vetiver used as a mulch, improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away as it is a natural insect repellent. It is in the same family as Lemon Grass, which we also carry.
Vetiver also is a nutritious and replenishable animal feed. Horses, cattle, and pigs love it.
We use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive Ornamental hedge.

COVID & MONKEYPOX
Andalusia exceeds 300 cases of monkeypox, mostly in Malaga and Seville: {Translation} 26/07/2022 14:33
– Andalusia has exceeded 300 cases of monkeypox, according to the Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs (Consejería de Salud y Consumo). The region reports 320 people infected on Tuesday, compared to the 273 cases reported last Friday, the last day on which the department offered data on the progress of the disease.
– For yet another week, the provinces of Malaga and Seville are the ones with the highest number of monkeypox infections. In the case of the Costa del Sol with 146, 45 percent of the total. The Andalusian capital has 80, 25 percent of those detected in Andalusia. Thus, the two together account for 70 percent of all the infections in the region.
– The next most affected provinces are Cadiz, with 41 positive cases; Granada, with 20; Cordoba, with 19; Huelva, with eight; Jaen, with four; and Almeria, with two. For yet another week, all Andalusian provinces have been affected by monkeypox, according to data from the Regional Ministry of Health.
– In addition, Andalusia has 78 people with possible contagion, extremes that are being analysed. In addition, 144 people have been cured of the disease without further sequelae and 165 suspected cases have been ruled out. Monkeypox- CDC says US leads globally in most known cases: More than 3,800 monkeypox cases have been reported in the US, the most of any country around the globe, government health data shows. The figure – which comes amid expanded testing in addition to the growing outbreak of the virus – is now ahead of that of Spain, where 3,105 cases have so far been reported. The two other countries with the highest number of infections, Germany and the UK, have reported 2,352 and 2,208 cases, respectively.

The spread of Covid in Andalusia falls to the lowest level in nearly five months: {Translation, summary} 26/07/2022 14:33
– The number of Covid-19 infections in Andalusia fell to 2,165 on Tuesday, a figure that confirms that the community remains in a phase of decline of the pandemic after weeks in which more than 7,000 cases of coronavirus were reported.
– This improvement in the number of infections is also reflected in the health pressure. Andalusia reported 705 patients admitted with coronavirus on Tuesday. This is 16 more than last Friday, but it is one of the lowest figures in recent weeks. It also means that the community is not increasing its hospitalised patients exponentially, as was the case until a couple of weeks ago.
– In the ICUs there has been an upturn, from 28 last Friday to 37 this Tuesday. However, the data must be put in context. The community had more than 700 people admitted and has a population of 8.5 million inhabitants.
– The number of deaths, with ups and downs, is also falling. On Tuesday Health reported 55 deaths, compared with more than 60 in mid-July. In total, 14,641 people have died since the start of the pandemic. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/andalucia/contagios-covid-andalucia-caen-cifra-baja-cinco-20220726131854-nts.html
SPAIN
Spain agrees to a voluntary reduction of 7% in gas consumption:
{Translation, summary}
– The Third Vice-President of the Government and Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, confirmed on Tuesday that Spain could voluntarily reduce its gas consumption by between 7% and 8%, as part of the Brussels plan to prepare for possible supply cuts by Russia and ensure supplies for next winter.
– “Support at all levels is going to be essential to achieve energy savings of around 7% or 8% of our gas consumption”, the Vice-President said at a press conference regarding the agreement reached by the EU-27 to reduce gas consumption by 15% until spring, with special exceptions, which opens the door to Spain lowering its gas savings ambition.
– This exception, which could cover countries that meet the criteria, such as Spain, Portugal and Italy, is included in the text of the regulation, which specifies that EU countries that have “infrastructures that allow gas to be transferred can significantly reduce their savings target”, the minister explained. This reduction in the ambition to save gas consumption would not be automatic, but rather member states would have to demonstrate that they meet a series of strict criteria, according to EU sources.
– In order to be able to apply this exception from the rule and reduce the ambition to cut gas consumption from 15% to 7%, countries must demonstrate that they can use their export capacity in case neighbouring countries need it and that they have made good use of their capacity to redirect liquefied natural gas to the rest of the EU market. Terral wind brings hottest night of summer, as yellow weather alerts cover much of Malaga province:
Updated Tuesday, 26 July 2022, 12:19
– The arrival of the local terral wind has led to what is already by far the hottest night in Malaga so far this summer. At 7am this Tuesday, 26 July, it was almost 34C in Torremolinos; nearly 33C at the airport and above 33C in the port of the capital, according to data provided by the Aemet meteorological centre in Malaga.
– But beyond the capital and its metropolitan area, it has been practically impossible to get to sleep without the help of air conditioning and fans along much of the coast. In Nerja the nightly low temp was 30C; and 32.7C in Benahavís. Slightly lower temperatures were registered in Alpandeire (28C) and Álora (28.6C).
– The capital and practically the whole province are under a yellow warning (except for Ronda), with a warning that it could exceed 40C in the interior of the Guadalhorce valley, and occasionally in Malaga city and Velez-Malaga it will be above 39C.
From Wednesday the Levante will return and the typical summer temperatures will return

A new forest fire in Mijas forces the motorway to be closed and houses to be evacuated: {Translation} , 26 July, 2022 16:29
– According to sources from the 112 emergency service, they began to receive calls from neighbours warning of the fire at 15:30 and firefighters from Infoca, Mijas and Fuengirola, civil guard, local police, civil protection and medical personnel have been deployed to the area.
– According to the Infoca, at first 32 forest firefighters, an operations technician, an environmental agent and six aerial vehicles were deployed in the area, including two ground loaders, a light helicopter, a medium-heavy helicopter, a Super Puma helicopter and a Kamov helicopter. A few minutes later, the Infoca has reported that it has expanded the device to 90 forest firefighters, among other technicians.
– In fact, the delegate of the Andalusian Government in Malaga, Carmen Casero, activated level 1 of the Emergency Plan for Forest Fires in Malaga at 16:40. This level is activated in those fires in which, although they can be controlled with the extinguishing means provided, it is estimated that, due to their possible evolution, it is necessary to implement measures for the protection of people and non-forest property.
– The fire broke out at kilometre 204, in the vicinity of the AP7 in Mijas. The mayor of Mijas, Josele González, explained to this newspaper that the fire has occurred in the mountains, but within the urban area, and confirmed that several urbanisations and houses have been evacuated, although it is still unknown how many residents have had to leave their homes. The fire has also forced the AP-7 to be closed to traffic in both directions between kilometres 201 and 214 due to smoke.
– According to González, the fire broke out in Lagar Martel, right next to the Vitania housing estate. “We are seeing what happens but with the day this is uncontrollable,” said the mayor mijeño clearly concerned and visibly angry at the proliferation of fires that are occurring in the municipality.
– In fact, this past Sunday there was another one barely a kilometre away. Thirty forest firefighters had to be called out to put it out. And on Friday 15th a large forest fire started in the Higuerón area of Mijas, which according to the first signs of the investigation, burnt nearly 2,000 hectares and forced the eviction of more than 2,000 homes in Alhaurín de la Torre and Alhaurín el Grande. A magnitude 3.1 earthquake is felt on the Costa del Sol:
– Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) has registered an earthquake this Tuesday morning, 26 July, with its epicentre in the Malaga municipality of Casares. The tremor, with a magnitude of 3.1 at a depth of 20 kilometres, was recorded at around 2.40am.
– It was not the only earthquake recorded in recent days in the province. On Sunday and Monday, the IGN recorded two tremors in Fuengirola, of magnitude 2.8 and 2.5, respectively; both in the morning, at around 10.05 and 9.53.
– Tremors with an epicentre in the Alboran Sea have also been registered recently, according to the National Geographic Institute. The most recent was this morning in the Alborán Sur sector, at 11.15 am., at a depth of 15 kilometres, with a magnitude of 2.5. Boris Johnson says he does not want to resign and will stay on if the membership backs him:
– Boris Johnson does not want to resign as prime minister and wants to fight the next general election as leader of the Conservative party, according to former party treasurer Lord Cruddas of Shoreditch.
– More than 10,000 Tory party members have put their name to a petition demanding that Johnson is included on the final ballot alongside Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss.
– The ‘bring back Boris’ campaign would reinstate Johnson as PM and, if the latest polls are to be believed (https://www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/poll-reveals-theres-a-new-favourite-for-next-tory-leader-and-its-not-who-you-might-think-330497/), could be quite a popular move.
– Speaking to the Mail, Lord Crudas slammed the ousting of Boris as prime minister by a minority of MPs. “It amounts to a coup. I am ashamed that this can happen in Britain, the birthplace of modern democracy”, he said. Over lunch at Chequers on Friday, Lord Cruddas of Shoreditch claimed Johnson told him he “wants to fight the next general election as leader of the party”.
– Johnson told him he was “enjoying following” his petition and “rooting for your campaign to succeed”, according to the reports.

EUROPE
Amazon, who made record profits for the past 3 years, to raise Prime prices up to 43% in Europe:
– Amazon.com Inc. will raise fees for its delivery and streaming service Prime in Europe by up to 43% a year, the online retailer said on Monday, as it moves to counter higher costs days before it reports quarterly financial results.
– The price hike, following one that Amazon announced for Prime in the United States in February, reflects mounting pressure from Wall Street on new Chief Executive Andy Jassy to shore up profit as inflation rises and a downturn looms.
– Shoppers in Germany, Amazon’s second-biggest market after the United States, will see fees for an annual Prime membership rise 30% to 89.90 euros ($91.88). The retailer’s No. 3 market, the United Kingdom, will have a 20% increase to 95 pounds ($114.47) per year, while Amazon sites covering Spain, Italy and France will charge Prime members between 39% and 43% more yearly.
– The changes take effect starting Sept. 15 when members join or next renew.
– It has increased prices for some merchants selling on its platform, too. In May, Amazon imposed an average 4.3% fuel and inflation surcharge on sellers storing and shipping their products in major European markets, following a similar move in the United States. Russia says it will leave the International Space Station after 2024: Russia will opt out of the International Space Station (ISS) program after 2024, the new chief of Russia’s federal space agency Roscosmos said Tuesday (July 26). Roscosmos leadership has been threatening to pull out of the International Space Station for months, stating that Western sanctions will “destroy” Russian cooperation aboard the orbital lab. While those threats have been numerous and inflammatory, they have yet to sound as definitive as the latest proclamation made by the new Roscosmos chief. “The decision to leave the station after 2024 has been made,” the current head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, said. FINANCIAL
The IMF warns of the risk of a global recession and lowers the GDP forecast by 0.8 for Spain: {Translation, summary}
– The report ‘World Economic Outlook Update: Bleaker and More Uncertain’ published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has cut the growth forecasts made in its last study in April due to the consequences of the invasion of Ukraine and the inflationary spiral. In the case of Spain, the institution anticipates GDP growth of 4% for 2022 and 2% for 2023, a reduction of 0.8% and 1.3% respectively.
– This lowering of growth expectations poses “a particularly prominent recession risk for 2023” according to the report, when growth in a sizeable number of economies is expected to “bottom out.” Maintaining financial stability is one of the main challenges in the face of the new path of monetary policy, which will require reforms in the debt resolution frameworks, in the words of the IMF.
– Faced with steadily rising prices and their consequences for living standards across the globe, the institution points to controlling inflation as the main priority, with monetary policies that will entail costs for the economy in the short term, but will avoid greater evils in the long run. Given the limited government budgets after two years of the pandemic, the IMF sees only two possible paths: either raising taxes or cutting public spending.– It also warns that if Russia decided to completely cut off gas supplies to Europe, for which the European Union is preparing by asking its members to reduce consumption by 15%, it would significantly increase inflation across the world through higher energy prices. In addition, this scenario could force Europe to force gas rationing, which would affect important industrial sectors and reduce Eurozone growth further in 2022 and 2023. Spain raises inflation forecast for 2022, lowers GDP growth target for 2023: Spain raised its inflation forecasts for 2022 and 2023 and lowered its economic growth target for 2023, Economy Minister Nadia Calvino said on Tuesday, citing the war in Ukraine for its continued negative impact on European economies.
– The inflation target was lifted to 7.8% in 2022 from a previous 6.1% projected in April.
– Driven by rising energy and food prices, annual inflation in Spain surpassed 10% for the first time in 37 years in June, forcing the government to raise its expectations for consumer prices.
